Unless Congress achieves a deal to head off the revised schedule for across-the-board spending cuts, the Defense Department in March will be forced to begin rotating monthly furloughs of all 791,000 of its civilian employees, a prominent budget analyst said on Wednesday.

“This would be a contracting nightmare for DoD because civilian contracting officers would be furloughed for a month,” Todd Harrison, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, told reporters...

Civilian contracting officers. Yep, that's me. The new job I'm taking in 2 1/2 weeks has me as the lone contracting officer in the building supporting a 3-star command. I am assuming I may be exempt from furlough because of this, but we'll see. Honestly, there is no way for an organization to operate without a contracting officer. We let the contracts and pay the contractors. We're the only people with warranted authority to do so. Will be interesting to watch.

I'm watching this very closely. We have done drill after drill to determine what our smallest, executable budget is. Already we've been cut about 23%.
