Gonzaga and Cal State Northridge

I don't remember the name of the stadium, but it WAS on campus in suburban Northridge. I was there a couple of times to see the Hornets. Cal Poly was a MUCH nicer trip, and a better stadium, to boot.

Northridge - crappy stadium. Was required to upgrade it as part of Big Sky membership - they didn't. Rather than get kicked out, or upgrade, they dropped the sport and moved to their inferior Bus League

Northridge was an experiment gone bad from both a school and conference perspective. It basically showed that DI football will not survive in the LA metro area unless you are USC or UCLA. The "stadium" was inadequate, the facilities were terrible, and there was no media coverage in LA about Northridge (or Big Sky) football, even during gameday. Northridge isn't even a town, just an LA neighborhood really, and it does not show up on many LA maps. Northridge did not gain anything from having football, let alone being in a conference 350 miles from your nearest team, and the Big Sky did not get any benefit from their "exposure" in the LA market. In the end, it was best for both to move on.

Well, if the NCAA would allow a school to be D-I in all sports except D-III football, there are plenty of L.A. area teams for Northridge to play. I'm not sure what the attendance would be like having to play Claremont-Mudd, but the option would be there. Of course, Claremont-Mudd probably has a better stadium, too.

Claremont-Mudd went 0-9 in the D-III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. They were blown out in every conference game. What the heck were they doing scheduling homecoming the next to last game of the season?

Northridge played in what had been a old horse racing track just north of campus called Devonshire Downs.
I went down for a Hornet game in the mid 80s, the place was a dump, wooden stands, probably had a capacity of about 4,000 and really bad lighting. They demolished it after the Matadors dropped football.

They were 5-3 in conf. in '96 with wins over EWU, ISU, SacSt, PSU and Weber. In '97, they were 4-4 with wins over ISU, SacSt, Weber and NAU. In '98 they were 5-3 with wins over Montana, EWU, PSU, Weber and NAU (by forfeit). In '99 they were 5-3 with wins over MSU, ISU, SacSt, Weber and NAU. 2000 was their only losing season, 2-6, with wins over MSU and EWU. Overall 21-19 and most of their wins and losses were close games. Compare that first 5 year record to PSU (19-21), SacSt (12-28) and UNC (5-35).

The Matadors wound up with all-time winning records vs. ISU, SacSt, Weber and S. Utah.

Correct; 21-19 vs. an ave. of 12-28 for the other three sterling additions. None have emerged as replacements for BSU, Nevada and Idaho after 16 seasons.

I'd say pretty close to zero.

Northridge's facilities are awful, and Gonzaga doesn't want to ruin the basketball glory. Not to mention the Bulldogs really don't have a viable conference option that fits them (unless they want to bleed travel money on the Pioneer League).

Well, it's a relatively small Catholic college trying to fit into a conference entirely populated by mid-to-large state schools. I guess the America East makes it work with Boston U and Hartford, but still…

I doubt the Big Sky is keen on them & I really doubt they're keen on the Big Sky.

Gonzaga considers themselves to be a big fish in an even bigger pond than the Big Sky. Chances are it would be the Big Sky that would come crawling to Gonzaga. I, too, do not think that would ever happen as there is no benefit for either side at this point. It will forever be an interesting footnote that Gonzaga was a founding member of the conference.

I don't remember Northridge having pushover teams - they were competitive. UC Davis had a 14-6 all-time record against them from 1975 to 2001. Probably best known to UC Davis fans by Jason Holleman scoring two TD's on kickoff returns for the Aggies in the 2001 game.
