One-Point Safety

Post by bluehenbillk »

OK, let's be honest, had any of you ever heard of this before last night's Fiesta Bowl?

Even the explanation the ref gave started with a disclaimer. Chip Kelly & the announcers never heard of it either.

I wonder how long this has been in the rulebook.

The announcers said it is the second time in history this has happened.

Goes to show you how many random rules these Ref need to know.

You should see the manuals the DI refs have to study. Its unbelievable how many rules they have, especially when it comes to clock management.

K-State blocked the extra point but the ball did not go into the endzone. A K-State player picked up the ball and ran backward into the endzone. He later pitched the ball to a teamate in the endzone who fumbled/was tacked.

I never heard of the rule. Another article said the one point safety has happened 4 times in college football history, but did not say how long the rule was on the books.

Interesting. More stupidity by special teams players. I guess it's no coincidence that they are "special" teams. :dunce:

It probably entered the rule books at about the same time as the rule allowing points for the return of a blocked PAT.

This opens the door for more questions. Obviously we know from the FU/ASU game that if a team lines up for a 2 point conversion and the other team runs it back, they get two. If a team goes for PAT and it's blocked, can it be run back for 1? Now what about if a team lines up for PAT, fumbles snap, holder runs it in, do they get 2? Team lines up for PAT, fumbles snap, holder runs to 1 yard line, fumbles, defense runs it into the endzone and gets tackled... 1 or 2 point safety?

My head hurts.

I missed the play, but it increases my respect for clenz. As an official in at least one sport (perhaps more), he has to know a TON of stuff, particularly stuff that almost never happens.

:notworthy:

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

That would be the rarest of them all: the 6.93-point safety.

Wow- I will try

If a team goes for PAT and it's blocked, can it be run back for 1?

Yes the defense can block an extra point and run in back the other way for 2 points.

Now what about if a team lines up for PAT, fumbles snap, holder runs it in, do they get 2?

Yes that is 2 points

Team lines up for PAT, fumbles snap, holder runs to 1 yard line, fumbles, defense runs it into the endzone and gets tackled... 1 or 2 point safety?

I would guess one point safety given that it still occured on an extra point try.

How bout this one. Kicking team goes for extra point. Kick is blocked, and defense runs the ball back. Defender gets ball knocked out of his hands Leon Lett style and the ball is loose in the endzone. Player from kicking team picks ball up and attempts to run out of the endzone but is tackled in endzone. Would that just be a touchback due to the change of possession in the endzone?

What is the call if:
Team A scores a TD to make it 6-0
Team B blocks the EP kick and returns it 99 yards to the 1 yard line and then fumbles
Team A recovers the fumble at the 1 and then runs into the endzone
Team B tackles the Team A ball carrier.

Is that a 1 point safety for Team B?
Is the score 6-1?
Or is it 2 points for Team B?
