Is this legit, or is Mills getting the Moore treatment?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

If I had to guess, I'd say it is pretty legit. I really don't think he is getting the Moore treatment.

No, no Moore treatment here. He has known all along that baring some catastrophic screw up, it was his call when it was time to hang it up. He is very respected by Dr Hunter and Coach Small and they are all men of honor and integrity so I doubt any ego or political agenda was at play here. It will be very interesting to watch this search process and see who ends up replacing him.

That's VERY good news.
Here's hoping that he enjoys his retirement and that Chuck South finds a good successor.

ABC News 4 - Charleston: Charleston Southern's Jay Mills Retires After 10 Years
He said he was leaving the program in great shape, adding that he was sure the team would win next year. After last season's no-win season, he said he could not leave then so he waited.
"Personally, professionally, athletically -- the best is yet to come for CSU," Mills said.
CSU's Athletic Director (Hank Small) said the school is already receiving calls from the NFL and the FBS on the open coaching availability.

Any timetable for more facility improvements (as the $$$ comes in, I know)? I heard the new FB field house is fine (even room for the visiting teams, I was told). What is next: lights, or more/improved seating?

With Mills, hopefully they can improve thier standing. Seriously CSU football is a joke. The school doesn't put the enough mout of money into the program(This is coming from a friend who is on the Board).kdinva wrote:He's done a lot of good things there, I wish him well.CSUBUCDAD wrote:Well CSU is losing a good man IMHO. You think they don't put anything into it? You might want to check the figures again. When Doyd was coaching they weren't putting anything into the program. They have increased the budget for football 10 fold in the last 8 years. Unless you do what Coastal did and dump 40 million into it right out of the gate it takes awhile to build the program. CSU did not because they were not going to go into debt in the process.

Grizz, if you look at who he is a fan of, it will show you he is a fan of CCU (Coastal Carolina). Yet more proof that Coastal Carolina needs to put more money into the academic side of thier institution instead of flooding athletics to make themselves feel good.grizzaholic wrote:Might want to put some monies into the English department as well.Ibanez wrote: With Mills, hopefully they can improve thier standing. Please don't pin his lack of grammar and misuse of the English language on CSU.

Re: Mills resigns news conference @ 2:30
Post and Courier - Charleston: Jay Mills Steps Down as Charleston Southern Football Coach
“The program is back. It’s on solid ground and I think it’s set up to be successful for a long time,” said Mills. “It’s just the right time for me personally. I thought about this decision after last season but my work was not done. I wanted to see us come back and finish strong and I thought our players and coaches did a great job.”
(CSU Athletics Director, Hank) Small says he will move quickly to fill the vacancy and will spend four days next week at the NCAA Football Coaches Convention in Nashville before coming up with a short list of qualified candidates. He hopes to have a coach in place within weeks as the program hits the final two weeks of recruiting. “We will move quickly but we will make sure we do the proper due diligence to hire the best man to lead this program,” said Small.
Small said the football coaching staff was recently increased by two positions, which the new coach will have a part in filling. Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix accepted a head coaching position at an Alabama High School on Wednesday, thus leaving three openings on the new staff.

Re: Mills resigns news conference @ 2:30
CSUBUCDAD is right. Funding for the football program has significantly increased. CSU is a smaller, private school and does not have the fortune of relying on South Carolina taxpayers to thrown money into a football and athletics program like Coastal.CSUBUCDAD wrote:You think they don't put anything into it? If you see my previous post above this one, you will see a quote from our Athletics Director that says two more staff positions were recently adding to the football coaching staff. So, the funding will cotinue to be there and continues to increase.
The new football fieldhouse is not the only capital project added to the athletics department. A new softball pressbox was recently added and plans are in place for a new basketball arena. If you drive through the campus, you will see major additions being completed to the School of Nursing, the Admissions and Reception Center, and a brand new Christian Leadership Center.

I hate when people say this becuase they never take into account Federal student loans.CSUBUCDAD is right. Funding for the football program has significantly increased. CSU is a smaller, private school and does not have the fortune of relying on South Carolina taxpayers to thrown money into a football and athletics program like Coastal.
That's great, however how much funding has been given to actually improving the team and game day? Seriously, high school prospects visit CSU and are probably taken aback. It's not easy getting good recruits to go to a religious school but it's more difficult when the field and facilities aren't par with competing schools. That stuff matters. I don't know the answer, but has CSU polled the population for input? Coastal did, Coastal listened. Coastal also hasn't increased tutition to pay for it all.If you see my previous post above this one, you will see a quote from our Athletics Director that says two more staff positions were recently adding to the football coaching staff. So, the funding will cotinue to be there and continues to increase.
Those areas are great, however how does CSU compete in Nursing against MUSC and Trident Tech? The new football fieldhouse is not the only capital project added to the athletics department. A new softball pressbox was recently added and plans are in place for a new basketball arena. If you drive through the campus, you will see major additions being completed to the School of Nursing, the Admissions and Reception Center, and a brand new Christian Leadership Center.
Now, IIRC CSU closed it's tennis program, which was highly successful, to redirect those funds. Any sign of terminating the less than successful atheltic programs?

I don't know about that. It is difficult to find the operating budget and expenses for CSU. Is this because its private?CSUBUCDAD wrote:I am pretty sure the mens tennis was eliminated to comply with title 9 requirements.

These are athletics discussion boards. They aren't really the place to be discussing Nursing and other academic programs. BUT, since you asked...Those areas are great, however how does CSU compete in Nursing against MUSC and Trident Tech?
FYI...Charleston Southern competes VERY WELL in Nursing against MUSC and Trident Tech. But, not just MUSC and Trident Tech. Charleston Southern competes VERY WELL with ALL other accredited nursing program in the state of South Carolina.
The Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing has a 96 percent six-year average pass rate on the national exam required to receive a license to practice (National Council Licensure Examination). Dr. Tara Hulsey, dean of the School of Nursing, says this is the highest six-year pass rate of all accredited BSN programs in the state of South Carolina.
Since enrolling its first class in the fall of 1995, the Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing has experienced tremendous growth. Through funding partnerships with Roper St. Francis and Trident HCA, CSU has added faculty and cutting-edge technology, including the addition of the i-Stan simulator by Meti in 2008.
The School of Nursing has one the highest four-year pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) of all accredited BSN programs in South Carolina. Since 2006, Charleston Southern students have a combined 97 percent pass rate. This national exam is required to receive a license to practice.
“You can’t have pass rates like that unless you have stellar faculty,” explained Dr. Hulsey. “We have small faculty-to-student ratios, so the students get a lot of hands-on experience.”
Hulsey added that the integration of computerized assessment testing, given to students throughout the curriculum, has provided both the students and faculty with a regular measure of competency. The ATI exams (Assessment Testing Inc.), a set of unique, critical-thinking application questions, provide nursing students with the necessary knowledge to master the NLCEX board exam.
“ There are so many factors that contribute to our NCLEX pass rate,” said Hulsey. “We have students taking computerized tests using NCLEX-based test questions from the very beginning of the program.”
Re: Mills resigns news conference @ 2:30
Who cares about the board, you brought it up. My question was suggesting that CSU provides a lesser quality education, It was genuine question. Living in Charleston my entire life, people only know CSU as the Baptist school with a shitty football field that's right off the interstate. Fact.BJuice wrote:These are athletics discussion boards. Good question. Smalls said he plans to move quickly to hire a new HC. Don't have a clue what he is looking for whether an established veteran and a bright young talent. I suspect it will cause a few recruits to think twice depending on what is in place by signing day. Guess we just have to wait and see what pans out.trock wrote:What is CSU's plan for a head coach, OC and what about recruits since signing day is four weeks away?
