- way too many people have kids way too early and when they can't afford them. In a society where birth control is widely known and available, and where abortion is legal and available, it's astounding how many people end up with children they don't want and can't afford, especially across multiple marriages.

- some people are just flat out dumb. The one guy who got tired of his 5th job in a few months at construction who up and quit, and didn't know you can't collect unemployment insurance if you voluntarily leave your job - come on man.

- There does need to be more of a focus on helping people who are trying. People who go out and get a job, but a job that doesn't go as far pay-wise as it would need to, should be helped more than the guy who just doesn't want to work.
Totally agree with this post. Take the kids out of these equations and it's not nearly the problem. But trying to raise a family, hold down a couple of jobs AND receive training or education to improve your lot are nearly impossible. Thus generational dependance is created. :ohno:

Good article Cappy, and surprising that despite the tightening up of numerous PA rules going back to Clinton and the fact that Indiana has some of the most stringent, people are still slipping through the cracks. Definitely shoots some holes in the conk memes regarding the working poor takers.

At least the guy in article doesn't have any dependents and is eligible for food stamps. Speaking of food stamps, I know a guy that owns several pizza franchises who told me food stamp purchases have doubled to 25% of his business since Obama was first elected.

I read the whole thing and others have already alluded to one thing I was thinking:

To a large extent the people they described contributed to their own problems by virtue of their poor decisions.

Otherwise, I know you'll be shocked to read that I don't think anybody "deserves" assistance from others. Nobody is...or at least nobody should be..."entitled" to help. Help is something that should be freely offered on an individual by individual voluntary basis. It should not be compelled by government through taxation for funding poverty and/or entitlement programs.

It's a shame that we have this paradigm whereby if someone has a personal problem that automatically means there should be a government program for helping people with that problem. No. Charity is wonderful and it's a much better society if there if a lot of people have a charitable attitude. But it should be strictly voluntary. Government should not be involved in dispensing charity at all.

Having a Constitutional Republic isn't the bad thing. What's bad is that the majority of the people have developed the entitlement mentality. The problem is a corrupted population.

I don't think there is a solution. Maybe after the nation finally collapses under the weight of the entitlement culture whatever rises from the ashes will be different. But we probably won't be around then.

I'm sure I won't care.

You know, I used to wonder how it is that this nation that was founded and expanded by people who were willing to take all sorts of risks without any guarantees degenerated into a population largely composed of sniveling, whining, wards of the State who think they're born with the world owing them something.

But then I realized that the people who founded the country...who started things...were self selected. They were a certain type of person. Now we have a bunch of people who were born here under circumstances where the entitlement mentality was prevalent. And even the ones who immigrate here now immigrate under circumstances where there are guarantees. I suppose it was inevitable.

Not seeing how that relates to what I wrote. When I reference the entitlement mentality I reference people that are here now. I'd say it's developed over the last 90 to 100 years. Also, it isn't about being willing to work hard. Plenty of people who have the entitlement mentality are willing to work hard.

It's the idea that if you have a personal problem in terms of things like financial difficulty, a health problem that needs attention, lack of housing, not enough to eat, etc., you have are entitled to have government help you. You are entitled to have government forcibly take money from others in order to solve your problems for you.

I sure don't. I was born into an upper-middle class family and was afforded anything and everything I wanted.

I'm going to be a school teacher and realize that I'll never have a house as big as the one I grew up in or even a car as nice as the one I totaled when 17. And I'm ok with that.

This world owes me nothing. I'll get what I earn and nothing more
