New Head Coach for UC Davis

The new head coach for UC Davis is Ron Gould, former associate head coach for Cal. He apparently is master of the run game - a long-time weakness of the Aggies.

I thought most people considered Dan Hawkins to be the front-runner? Did he apply?

I think we couldn't offer enough money for Hawkins and he was a former Aggie. I think they were looking for a new direction - not an Aggie but familiar with UC and its academic requirements. Associate head Coach of UC Berkeley plus a great recruiter and running backs coach - two areas we were weak in.

As I understand it, Hawkins was one of the three finalists, but the hire did not happen for whatever reason (if he was offerred, and many think that he was...). The Aggies seem, overall, quite happy with the selection of Gould.

Note: After reading the Sac Bee story, apparently both Hawkins and Belotti declined to be interviewed for the position (so much for what we thought we knew during the secrecy-shrouded process!).
