Exactly.

You just made my point.

It's illegal for Joe Public to own/possess explosives & it's certainly illegal to hijack a plane.

But .223 caliber rifles? How many would you like today sir?
It's legal to fly a plane and legal to own explosives if you are responsible and have a license, same with guns.

It's illegal to barge into a school and start shooting people too.

I guess there's two ways to look at this. What I see are things that are illegal, yet happen because of sick, evil people. You seem to think making guns illegal would keep sick, evil people from having and using them. That's why I asked earlier if cocaine was illegal. Seems many people who want to use cocaine find a way to get it.

It's also illegal to carry a gun of any kind onto school property.

I'm not for making guns illegal - in our lifetimes in this country it'll never happen. You could get a majority in an urban area like NYC, Philly or DC to want that. But it'll never fly in the South, the Midwest & the Western states.

I understand why a person would want a handgun for "personal protection", no problem. I understand why a person may wish to have access to guns to shoot at a range or to hunt animals like deer, etc.

I completely disagree with the premise that a non-military or non-law enforcement person be allowed to own or possess "automatic weapons" or "assault rifles".

Those rifles are no different than "deer rifles", same calibers and neither of them will kill anyone unless an sick asshole pulls the trigger.

I would give up my "deer rifles" but never my autos and semi autos BECAUSE of the military and law enforcement.

This is why you are so ill informed. One cannot own an automatic weapon or assualt weapon, pretty much the same thing, without special permits and background checks and yearly checks...being that they are either full auto, or have selector switches for semi/3 round burst.

God damn it pisses me off to no end when one of your ilk or some dummie on the news says assault rifle when it is just a god damned ar 15 or something similar.

Just curious. What does the AR stand for in AR-15?

I know what you are doing...don't do it.

It is based on the military weapon.

This really sucks, and I wish there were easy answers (or answers period) on how to stop this. I don't know how a guy wakes up in the morning and says "I think I'll go blast some little kids." If he was depressed and wanted out, just off yourself and keep everyone else out of it - if he wanted suicide by cop he didn't need to take out a bunch of innocent folks at one of the softest targets in the community. I'll never get it. :ohno:

There's nothing to "get" about a psychopath, other than that they have no feelings like the rest of us.

If you can walk into a kindergarten classroom and shoot every precious 5 or 6 year old looking at you frightened, you are not a normal human being. For people like that, I truly hope than hell exists.

I get it....it doesn't matter how much psych testing, fingerprinting, background checking, etc. you do people like this will still manage to get weapons if they want them badly enough. The local and state governments don't have the resources to do in depth pre-purchase qualifications for people they deem "worthy" of gun ownership. It did spook me at how easily I could buy one in SC - a quick call by the dealer to Columbia to be sure I wasn't a felon, then hand over the cash. The entire transaction took about 8 minutes.

+1 hard to monitor people that are sick mentally. You cannot see it, and it will not tell you, nor are the signs always there, even if you are well versed in mental health.

Teachers need to be required to take a handgun safety course then be certified to operate and use a handgun proficiently.

If not, get another job.

Our kids need to be protected in the present tense not after the fact like when the cops show up dozens of minutes later when its over.

Education is the key so lets get these PUBLIC SCHOOL teachers leading the way.
Absolutely not. That would place more guns in schools where theoretically, the kids could get them. Plus, when you have a gun, you are obviously more likely to use it and there would definitely be an uptick in school shootings because of teachers having stupid arguments, not getting a raise, or being fired.

Simply place an armed cop in all public schools and that should deter most.

Not always or at least the perception that people have. One day the person is normal, acts normal, is normal. Next they are derranged and commit a hateful act such as this one. But maybe there are signs, but they are so subtle that no one recognizes them.
