No doubt about that. The beef my uncle raises in north central MT is the best I've ever had, hands down. But Costco is a lot closer to me than his ranch.Bison Fan in NW MN wrote:Just signed up at the Costco in Fargo,ND. Nice play with a variety of everything.
Interesting debate here on meat/where it is better. Costco steaks are good, but IMO, the best meat is from your local farmer. A lot of you guys probably live in bigger metro areas but here in 'rural' MN, the best meat is always from my local farmer/rancher friends.
I won't ever shop at Costo again.

Local meat is not great just because it is local, genetics and finish are the driving forces. We have bought local beef that is wonderful, and some that is just plain terrible. Bad thing is if you order a half beef, you got a half beef to deal with whether it is good or not.
Got tired of all the round steak, and junk that is not all that great even on a good side, and we never need the hundreds of pounds of beef grind, elk gives us that.
Lot easier to grab a whole cut to your liking and get exactly what you want and leave all the london broil, pinwheel steak, flank steak, and cube steak for the 47%ers.

Agreed. A friend's father raises 40-60 cattle outside of Cheney. They get the required USDA injections and that's it, so about as organic as you can get. We bought a side a few years back and while it wasn't terrible, it wasn't as flavorful or tender as what we can get at Rosauers or Coscto.Wedgebuster wrote:Local meat is not great just because it is local, genetics and finish are the driving forces. Walmart meat is serious crap. Safeway meat is only slightly better.
Is the meat at Sam's Club the same as Walmart?

Interesting.
It must be different in other parts of the country. I have never had anything from a store or restaurant that is better than meat from my rancher/farmer friends.
