Its suppose to be a RETIREMENT program. You are paid out based on what you put in. You remove the caps on what you pay in then you remove the caps on what you receive upon retirement. So your solution would do nothing.houndawg wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:
Well, wedgie....unless SOMETHING is done all us gullable saps under the age of 60 won't get any of the money WE are entitled to that WE paid into the system because it'll be **** BROKE.
Is that really that difficult to understand? Are the current beneficiaries MORE entitled to the money they paid in than WE are? And REFORMING entitlement isn't "squelching" (whatever the **** THAT means) on social security...it's making minor course changes to maintain a financially viable system for those who've paid in hundreds of thousands of dollars but have little to no shot of ever actually SEEING any of that money come back in our golden years.
Remove the income cap on SS taxes and we're good for another 60 years.

Alright Z, show us ONE inkling of evidence that SS will "go broke" in your lifetime, or hell, even MINE. I'll wait.Do you know what an unfunded obligation is? Do you know how REAL companies, who are required to follow REAL accounting rules, have to account for unfunded obligations?According to a new analysis from USA Today, American households are now on the hook for $534,000 to pay for the county’s debt and the unfunded obligations, or excess costs, for programs like Social Security and Medicare.
USA Today reveals the eye-popping numbers for the federal government’s mounting fiscal problems. A staggering $5.3 trillion was added to the government’s tab last year, putting the overall figure at an astonishing $61.6 trillion.
The report offers fresh evidence that the time to act is now. Entitlement programs, in particular, are driving the debt crisis, despite what some in Congress and the White House would have you believe.
USA Today puts the increase for Medicare at $1.8 trillion. Social Security wasn’t far behind with $1.4 trillion increase.
This fairy-tale accounting method used by our federal govenment is a **** joke. They're the ONLY organization allowed to operate this way. Hell, even state governments have to balance a budget.![]()

If this is really that big of a concern, you should be the #1 fan of ending the war on drugs and cutting our military budge in half in addition to entitlement cuts. And you should NEVER vote for a Republican again as they are equally bad about spending.BDKJMU wrote:Exactly. Re: Fiscal Cliff?
A few examples of government agencies or departments that are absolute fluff, duplicate efforts, etc., etc.:
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is a bilateral United States foreign aid agency established by Congress in 2004, applying a new philosophy toward foreign aid. It is an independent agency, separate from the State Department or USAID. The MCC has approximately 300 employees and a 2012 budget of $1.1 BILLION dollars.
OSHA, with 2387 employees and 2012 budget of $583 million, along with a SEPARATE Mine Safety and Health Administration with ANOTHER 2,430 employees and an additonal $360 million budget.
DOJ: Employs over 10,000 attorneys with a budget of $27.1 BILLION. WAFJ.
Bureau of Indian Affairs: an agency of the federal government of the United States within the U.S. Department of the Interior. It is responsible for the administration and management of 55,700,000 acres (225,000 km2) of land held in trust by the United States for Native Americans in the United States, Native American Tribes and Alaska Natives. Apparently this takes over 9,000 employees and an annual budget exceeding $2.8 BILLION.
Additionally, there's the Bureau of Indian Education costing another $127 million, which is responsible for overseeing the education of 41,000 indian children.
National Labor Relations Board, with over 1,100 employees and a bloated budget of over $300 million annually.
And perhaps the most inappropriately named government department EVER created, the newly minted Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created as a result of the clusterfuck known as the Dodd-Frank Act, already costs the taxpayers an additonal $365 MILLION annually (estimated to climb to $598 million by FY2013, FYI).
Honestly, I could go on and on, as there's are literally HUNDREDS of departments/subdepartments/commissions etc. exactly like these that serve no viable purpose, but anyone with a brainstem can get the picture. But, as chizzang so often reminds us, the Government NEVER shrinks the government. And taxing the "rich" will be like putting a finger in the dike while water pours over the top. There's really only one logical outcome left, and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Great article. I agree with much of what they say.The political argument that cutting defense spending will cost jobs is spurious. Pentagon spending purchases one item and does not provide greater economic benefits. The F-35 program is slated to cost $1.5 trillion over its lifetime; these are resources that are desperately needed elsewhere or could pay down the national debt.
After more than a decade of wars of dubious value, America will receive a greater return on investment by investing in our troops and veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Every dollar wasted on unnecessary programs could be caring for and training our servicemen and women.
Instead of building new toys that are kept in the garage, let's provide education and job training to veterans. Recent congressional refusal to approve such a jobs program is a disgrace.
Cutting Pentagon spending recognizes that national security is more than military power. The United States is stronger with a strong economy, sustainable jobs, investment in education, renewal of our infrastructure and a sensible energy strategy. Continuing to waste money when our nation should have other priorities is bad policy and bad for security.

Re: Fiscal Cliff?
Federal spending for FY 2013 is projected at 3.8 trillion for 2013.
http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/fed ... g_2013USrn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The so called Fiscal Cliff would only cut 110 billion of that for FY 2013 (the 1.2 trillion is spread over 10 yrs). That's only about 2.6%. If we can't even manage to cut that much, then we are truly f***ed.....

And that 2.6% "cut" is after the standard, built in 7% increase in gov't spending.

Why are we keeping the lights on in the National Constitution Center when we seem to have turned them out in large parts of the Constitution itself?

Here's another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:
Let's say, You come home from work and find
there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood....
and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.
What do you think you should do ......
Raise the ceilings, or remove the shit?

Re: Fiscal Cliff?
I held out some optimism until recently. I began to come to the conclusion a few years ago we were pretty much past the point of no return with the govt bailouts + hearing about the 80> trillion in exploding national debt & unfunded entitlement liabilities + Obamacare + seeing what is happening with the great social welfare states in Europe + the election. Romney had the best economic resume of any major presidential party candidate in a generation, but I think he would have had a very slim chance to get it turned around. There is zero chance with the guy who never ran so much as a lemonade stand. No matter what, a plurality of the voters will continue to vote for things the govt cannot possibly provide that are mostly paid for by others, and they will continue to do that right up until what has become a massive womb to tomb social welfare state crumbles, just like it beginning to crumble in Europe. It won't mean the end of the country, but rather a very long, very painful economic readjustment period that could last a generation with prolific economic and social unrest.GannonFan wrote:You're just catching on to this?BDKJMU wrote:Federal spending for FY 2013 is projected at 3.8 trillion for 2013.

He had no choice. In addition to the fact that a majority of Americans believe rates should go up and the Business Roundtable (30 of the largest CEOs) wrote a letter to him requesting the change, the rates were going up January 1st whether Republicans liked it or not by simple operation of law.Ibanez wrote:http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/20 ... ?hpt=po_c2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;House Speaker John Boehner has offered to include higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans as part of a deficit-reduction deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, a source close to the talks confirmed to CNN on Saturday.
The wealthy will not stop being proactive and trying to make a buck. We've had a 10 year tax holiday and I think this isn't even going further enough. NOW, let's do some serious cutting and reforming.

Re: Fiscal Cliff?
None of it matters because it is all smoke and mirrors. All the cuts they are discussing are $1 trillion over 10 years. Meanwhile we have an annual deficit of $1.5 trillion.Ibanez wrote:http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/20 ...

C'mon Reps and Dems. We are so close. We're getting there.
Obama is working with you Republicans. We can get this deal done. For the first time, Boehner this weekend had offered to accept tax rate increases on household income over $1 million, sources said. Obama, who had stood steadfast at the threshold of $250,000, on Monday offered Boehner a package which would raise rates on household income above $400,000.
The president also offered ground on cuts to discretionary federal government spending. His initial offers had included no cuts; his latest offer cuts of $200 billion, divided evenly between defense and non-defense programs
http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/17/politics/ ... ?hpt=hp_t3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The source told CNN that Obama's latest offer includes $1.2 trillion in revenue increases on individual income and $1.22 trillion in spending reductions, though Boehner's office said the math adds up differently.

Re: Fiscal Cliff?
It might be inevitable but I don't think you just give it up without getting something in return. It's completely reasonable for the Republicans to offer to support the tax increase in exchange for reform of entitlement programs. Question is, if the Republicans offer compromise and the Democrats stick to Pelosi's guns that the Medicare age and other reforms are off limits who looks worse?danefan wrote:He had no choice. Obama and the Donks are hell bent on raising taxes, but the IRS is settling outstanding tax liabilities for pennies on the dollar....some things just don't make sense.Ibanez wrote:http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/20 ...
