The first thing you see when you walk in the door of either is a large electronic display. That's after you show your ID to make sure you are a member. You walk down the isles, same stuff, different brand name(Maybe), bulk packaging. When I check the price at my local store, it's very much the same price per unit. Taking the politics of the owners out, I really don't see much of a difference.dbackjon wrote:Not even close. One is trash. The other is actually decentGil Dobie wrote:

Are you absolutely that dense
These two companies share only two things
The size of their buildings - and - the format with which they go to market
Every other thing is completely different about them
Starting with:
Costco has the largest contract Organic Growers in North America / Beef / Eggs / Milk / Fruits / Veggies
Sams Club did not offer Organic foods until this fall
One product / New Zealand Lamb / Non-U.S. product
Dude...
That is just one HUGE example how the two companies are completely different
I don't belong to either / But I work with both / We design "one off" products for both companies
My point is: They couldn't be MORE different
Another HUGE example is:
One company is owned by the workers ( a true employee owned company)
Sams club employees work for minimum wage
When we design a product for Costco their primary concern is "quality"
When we design a product for Sam's the only concern is price
can you see the difference there..?
One is NOT better than the other (I agree) but they are completely different

I see the political difference, but I don't care about that. If I go into a store like this and look at the products. If the price is right, and it's of good quality, and I need it, I'll buy it. The other intangibles really don't matter when I look at the value of a large warehouse chain.Chizzang wrote: Dude...

I've worked for Costco for 2 years now, great pay (start well above minimum wage) great benefits, they promote from within 95% of the time, attention to quality over cost, it's a great place to work for. Also Costco almost doubles Sam's in sales ($1.5B I believe for Costco) with less stores!!

Dropped six bills at the Missoula Costco just yesterday. Whole prime rib roast on the rack, five pounds of big shrimp, three lamb racks, half gallon shucked Washington oysters, six prime buffalo rib steaks, various cheeses, relish trays, and other goodies just for our annual Festivus season celebration!!
Never bothered to stop at walmart.

There's a Sams in Billings where we go to Costco, been there, it is not even close, Sam's is nothing but Walmart with bigger packages. Kirkland (store brand at Costco) kicks total ass, Walmart has no answer for it.
They are also way behind the curve on running a hypermarket, which Costco figured out years ago.
I joined Price Club back in the early 80's and will never give them up over a walmart.
Its also nice not to eat meat that has been packed in Carbon Monoxide to make it a pretty red.

Meat is the #1 reason we shop at Costco. A few years ago we had to throw out rancid meat from Wal-Mart on 3 consecutive nights, haven't bought meat from Wal-Mart since. Meanwhile we have never had a bad experience with Costco meat, plus it is a pretty decent price for what you get.polsongrizz wrote:Exactly, we checked out a sams club once, it was a complete joke.
