16, 24 or 32

Post by DMoo531 »

16 or 32?

I always said that Div I-AA was best because the champion was decided on the field and before Christmas. That is only possible with a 16 team field. With now 11 and 12 if Ivy decides to join us, a 16 team field with AQ's is not feasible. We could eliminate AQ's and keep to 16. But we would not have a Div I-AA playoff. We would have a playoff of selected teams from 4 conferences: BSC, CAA, MVFC & SoCon. Some say that is better, a team shouldn't be in the playoffs if they've no chance to be champion. If that were true, there is no reason to include BigSouth, MEAC, NEC, OVC, Patriot, Pioneer and most years SLC teams. But sports is the realm of dreams and possibilities. Try as they might, no computer program has been able to measure the size of an athlete's heart. To tell a team they are not allowed a chance goes counter to the whole idea of sports, where occasionally David does kill Goliath. Someday when you've time I'll tell you the story of the '83/'84 MSU Bobcats.

NCAA thinks that expanding to 3 more at-large will solve the problem. I think not. In 2012 it would allow room for Lehigh (10 wins), Albany (9) and UR(8). But there are still a number of 8 win and 7/with a FBS win teams left. Even expanding to 32 would not accommodate everyone who proved themselves worthy. Yes, most of them haven't a snowball's chance in hell. But tell that to the '69 Mets. In 2012 we slammed the door on teams like Lehigh and Albany, although we left it open for SHSU, Wofford and Stony Brook. To do so leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. In 2012 we left over 10 teams with 7 or more Div I wins on the outside. Perhaps 2012 is unusual, I think not.

I say we move to a 32 team field ASAP. Some years we may have to dip into 6 win teams to fill the 32. If we do, we do. Or we could cut it off at 7 Div I wins and give byes as needed. Either is better than slamming the door on a 10 win Lehigh. What I suggest will not add a week to the playoffs. It will only utilize the slots that are available. Byes would be the only thing eliminated.

always amusing to see MVFC/BigSky/CAA/SoCon fans acting like BIg10/Big12/SEC/Pac12 fans in this regard.

I just think 16 is the right number for the FCS

I think 8 is the right number in the FBS.

I actually like the idea of adding more teams as I dont see it as watering down the field. In fact it just means more football gets to be played and what is wrong with that? I never expecting people to have the "BCS Elitism" mentality in the FCS ranks, if you think the teams you will be adding are scrubs, why complain you will beat them anyways according to your guys logic correct?

32 is alot of teams but I could see it happening and will be happy with 24. I agree every team deserves a shot, despite what everyone thinks or not. Anyone that says that this team doesnt deserve to be a champion because of their record is total crap. NFL is a good example, with that mentality the Giants and the Packers would not be allowed to have gone on to the playoffs. :twocents:

Not quite Jay. The larger the field, the more MVFC/BigSky/CAA/SoCon teams in. Richmond and NAU were probably two of the next three teams in. At 16 you can get the OVC, MEAC, Big South, NEC... if they are deserving. Coastal made it with an at-large. Many teams have made in the past as independents.

The BCS wants everyone else shutout. They think 4 is plenty. Big difference.

I think 16 is the right number if you only want teams that have an actual chance to win an NC but I'm ok with 24. It gives the top 8 teams a bye over Thanksgiving weekend and I actually like having the chipper in January. It gives the participants a little time to prepare, heal and for their fans to make travel plans. 32 is too many!

32.

i would like to see more teams from different conferences across the country meet. We've played 16 playoff games and this will be the first time weve faced somebody from either the NEC or the PL. Also greater potential for cindarellas, greater chance your team's season gets extended.

I like it exactly as it is now... 20 teams. I could live with 24 if the Ivy jumps in. No way 32 makes any sense whatsoever.

Would those be the same garbage a conferences the CAA uses to pad their win totals with? :coffee:

Most people don't watch or pay attention to the I-AA tourney. I don't think this is something that will give any added attention.

I don't think the CAA played any Big Sky opponents this year.

Do you realize NAU almost made the playoffs this year without beating a single ranked I-AA opponent?

Meh. There may be some unexpected results in the first round, but I don't really see a real "cinderella" going very far in the playoffs. I know the Big Sky had some upsets of #1 in the past, but IIRC the BSC team lost in the next round every time.

Wasn't JMU on the road during their run? How about Nova in 2010 upsetting SFA and ASU in '10?
