Do you really think anyone in Sacramento or California in general knows or cares anything about UNI or what your mascot is?clenz wrote:NONE OF THOSE SPORTS MEAN JACK **** OUTSIDE OF THE FANS OF THE SCHOOL.SuperHornet wrote:
That sorta depends on which sport you're talking about. In terms of football and boys hoops (perhaps girls as well), sure. But if you're talking crew, gymnastics, or weightlifting (a club sport at which Sac has excelled for years), you would be in error.
Before I started following FCS football I didn't even know there was a **** Sacramento State....
My favorite game to play at work, since I work with a bunch of self proclaimed "football experts", is "name the mascot and conference"......Not a single person has ever gotten Sac State - and most ask if I made the school up.

This. FCS is not a recognizable brand and very few programs are recognizable on a national level. The same could be said for bottom tier FBS. Nobody at any water cooler probably has any idea about any FCS mascot that isn't within their geographic region.Green Laser wrote:Do you really think anyone in Sacramento or California in general knows or cares anything about UNI or what your mascot is?clenz wrote: NONE OF THOSE SPORTS MEAN JACK **** OUTSIDE OF THE FANS OF THE SCHOOL.

I do. UM has made national headlines this past year.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Montana's athletic program gets more national pub than Sac's. Agreed.EWURanger wrote:To be fair, maybe that'd change a little if Sac could make it to the playoffs a few times. Not saying there'd be a huuuge difference, but kinda hard to gauge interest in something that the local populace has had limited exposure to. Maybe a local team having success in the playoffs would change things a little.SDHornet wrote: In Montana sure, in CA the FCS playoffs are an afterthought at best. But the merchandise stats still speak for themselves.

No....however, UNI has been ranked in the top 25 in mens basketball 3 different times, received votes every year in the top 25 pol at different times, been to the S16 in basketball and been on the cover of Sports Illustrated in the last 3 years....so...there's that.Green Laser wrote:Do you really think anyone in Sacramento or California in general knows or cares anything about UNI or what your mascot is?clenz wrote: NONE OF THOSE SPORTS MEAN JACK **** OUTSIDE OF THE FANS OF THE SCHOOL.

I, however, am not ignorant enough to think that all of that is enough to make UNI a national name....unlike SH who thinks a womens sport and club sports are enough to make a national name.

If you're talking the average person, that's certainly true. There are certain exceptions to that, notably being an FCS alum from a different area or having friends that are or have attended an FCS intstitution. Additionally, people may be aware of the upper tier (if there is such a thing) Ivies because of history. For example, I'm clearly aware of Liberty because that is the institution from which I graduated (twice) and am still attending. I'm also aware of UNI and CCU because I have friends currently or recently attending there. While that by no means applies to the public at large, there WILL be exceptions to SD's general rule.SDHornet wrote:This. SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I'm only referring to Comcast, but up here Root is only a part of the residential basic, not public viewing business basic. Pretty sure it's a Comcast decision.JALMOND wrote:I still get Root (aka the Montana Sports Network.kalm wrote:
Brief side topic. Root sports used to be Fox Sports Northwest in our area. It carried Mariner games, pac-10 football and hoops, a few GU games etc. It was part of both the residential and business basic cable package. After the switch to Root (and of course the BSC deal), it became a pay channel for businesses with a price tag of $59/month. That's well over half the price of the entire basic cable package. I'm guessing more than a few bars will not carry Root now.). Included in my basic cable plan. Its not a pay channel (I don't think, anyway). I also get the Pac-12 network (the Northwest feed, can't get the national feed).
I don't have DirectTV or Dish. I guess maybe that is it.
