The only one that is edible out of the mega chains is Pizza Hut. The Hut's stuffed crust is pretty damn good. Dominoes and Papa Johns are just horrible.

Incorrect. Since Dominoes changed, theirs is best, hands down. Then Papa. PH is cardboard...eagleskins wrote:The only one that is edible out of the mega chains is Pizza Hut. The Hut's stuffed crust is pretty damn good. Dominoes and Papa Johns are just horrible.

Seriously? What do you have against good pizza? Norms is a great spot (spent a lot of time there in high school) but Woodys? Ugh. It's not the best. I understand it's your opinion but maybe it's the best on the beach.eagleskins wrote:Solid pie. But the best pizza in Charleston, and maybe in my top 5 anywhere, is Woodys.Ibanez wrote:
We have a small shop that a hippie opened up. It seriously has the best pizza in Charleston. You can get a standard pizza, but they are more of a specialty pizza shop with bases such as olive oil, bbq sauce, cucumber wasabi, black bean, etc... They are truly one of kind down here. Look them up the next time you're in town, they are Park Pizza Company.

I didn't realize you were in Greenville. I have a good friend that lives there but it has been a long time since I visited. Only place I remember going to was Trio Cafe on Main St.ASUG8 wrote:I never said the rest of the menu was that great, just pretty good pizza. In Cedar Falls the order of quality out of the chain resturants is
1. Papa Johns.
2. Pizza Hut
3. Little Ceasar's
4. God Fathers
Re: Papa John's founder is a douche!
Also, if the cost is 11-14 cents added to each pizza that adds up very quickly.
It may not sound like much...BUT...with how many pizzas they sell it comes to about $5-8 million annually.
That's a heft chunk of change.

Papa Johns is by far better that Pizza Hut and Dominos. Godfathers is gross. Here's a tip: avoid Pizza that comes from a gas station.clenz wrote:I've never had Domino's....Vidav wrote:

My kids hate PJ's. We have a local joint, Wedgie's, that we order from for delivery. I can tolerate the gluten free at Dominos, but it isn't that great. We have two places, one's a greek place and the other is a Mellow Mushroom, that have pretty good gluten free crust, but they don't deliver.
Dear lord... please allow this dangerous combination of hair spary, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me. All my Best, Earlie Cuyler.
Re: Papa John's founder is a douche!
I would take pick the local joints any day over any of those....but talking about those doesn't do much in this discussion because very few of us would have overlap

Norms has definitely gone down. I was in there last summer and was very disappointed. Now, back on the day, they were awesome! I think they changed hands and the new owner went cheap on ingredients and opted got conveyor belt ovens. No good pizza ever came out of a conveyor belt oven.eagleskins wrote:Woodys destroys Norms. Amused by a bunch of non-New Yorkers discussing the "best" pizza chains.
A few years back, we were vacationing on the Outer Banks with a number of families and their kids. We arrived early and the house was still being cleaned, so we went out looking for lunch. We saw a place called "New York Pizza." I scoffed at the presumptuous name, but the kids insisted they wanted pizza. I warned them it was not going to be anything like the pizza they are used to.
So we go in and order a pie, and I'm stunned. I tell my wife that this pizza is good enough to make it on Arthur Ave. in the Bronx. I tell the waitress I think the pizza is excellent; it could make it on Arthur Ave, and I know, because I used to live in the Bronx.
So a few minutes later the owner is at my table. I recognize him! He used to make pizza at Full Moon on Arthur Ave when I was in college! So he tells me he's from Belmont, learned how to make pizza on Arthur Ave., and then moved to the Outer Banks. "There's no real competition here."

You realize that a lot of folks from New York, Chicago, etc. move away and start businesses in the flyover parts of the country from time to time, right? I'm sure the Italians laugh at NY pizza as being authentic too.JoltinJoe wrote:Amused by a bunch of non-New Yorkers discussing the "best" pizza chains.![]()

Pizza in Italy is just something they do for the tourists, especially from America. With that said, I always find NY's boasting about pizza to be a funny thing. Just like almost anyplace in the Northeast, half the places that make pizza suck, NY included. There's nothing really unique about NY pizza when you have pizza anywhere else in that region of the country. Boston pizza is just as good for instance. You can find good NY-style pizza all over the place. It's the Chicago deep dish pizza that's far less widespread in terms of quality. A lot of people make it, but few make it very well.

I found it amusing that JJ is so smug in suggesting that only NY has good pizza. I love a good NY pizza when I'm in the mood for something cheesy just like I love a good Chicago pizza when I'm in the mood for something with a little more substance.ASUG8 wrote:You realize that a lot of folks from New York, Chicago, etc. move away and start businesses in the flyover parts of the country from time to time, right? You can consistently find great pizza in Chicago, NY, etc. but you can also find great pizza in other locations. It's hit or miss but there are great places throughout the country.

Re: Papa John's founder is a douche!
Actually, the pizza first made in Italy is called "Neapolitan " pizza, a thin crust pizza, and pretty much in the US, the only place you find quality Neapolitan is New York. There are places in the US where you can get a decent New York style pie. But I've never seen quality Neapolitan outside of New York. So when we scoff at your pizza, we are essentially saying quality thin crust isn't available anywhere but New York.GannonFan wrote:Pizza in Italy is just something they do for the tourists, especially from America. And Chicago deep dish isn't pizza. It just isn't. Don't get me wrong. It's not a bad dish. But it's not pizza. I prefer a nice thin crust Neopolitan any day to deep dish, largely because it is much healthier due to fewer empty calories.

Could have fooled me - I thought pizza originated in Naples but I could be mistaken. I had some great pizza in Venice, Florence, and all over Tuscany. Maybe it seemed to taste better because of where I was, but it was consistently good no matter where we had it. We always got margherita pizza, which is nowhere near as heavy as some of the pizzas I've had here.GannonFan wrote: Pizza in Italy is just something they do for the tourists, especially from America. Lombardi's in NY is probably my overall favorite to date, although I had some pretty average pizza in NYC also.
