In general, most employers hire based on demand, not taxes. In your case with the bees dying everywhere and the price of honey in the super market, your demand should be going up. :thumb:

How's this one. Papa John's announced yesterday it would cut hours on all it's employees to ensure none are working more than 30 hours a week so they arent eligible for healthcare coverage through the company... Yet over the summer the CEO of Papa John's announced to shareholders they would increase pizza prices by 14 cents each to cover the additional costs of healthcare for its employees.

So either they decided against the 14 cent plan or they are going to increase prices and pocket the money? And if they decided to cut hours instead of raising prices why? Most people I'm sure would have no problem paying an extra 14 cents and those that would object are the pricks that never tip anyway so fuck them.

All this on top of the fact that this fall the CEO has appeared in commercials with Payton Manning promoting the giving away of over $20 million in profits through the giving away of 2 million pizzas.

Free pizzas to football fans good. Taking care of the people who make and deliver those pizzas bad!

**edit: corrected $200 million to $20 million**

The US consumes over 400 million lbs of honey but the domestic beekeeper only produces around 150 million in a given year. Over half of our honey is imported. That 12 oz honey bear that is $3.80 (here in MN) has only $1.50 worth of honey in it....a lot of 'middle men' taking a cut up to the supermarket.

Buy honey from your local beekeeper, most honey in the stores is blended with foreign honey.

Call a local beekeeper and ask if he would want to put bees on your land. Granted, depending on the # of hives he wants to put on your land, you need to have adequate acreage for him to put them. Plus having a 'floral source' within flying distance of the bees (3-4 miles). This could include a lot of different things. Here in NW MN, the main nectar sources are sweet clover, alfalfa, canola, sunflowers and basswood trees. Most beekeepers, including myself, give honey to the landowner for letting them put bees on their land. Some guys give money but most landowners I work with want the honey, esp when it comes from their land. I think I have had only 1 or 2 people tell me NO when I have asked them to put bees on their land......Midwest nice I guess... :thumb:

Beekeeping is pretty cool and interesting. I pollinate almond trees in CA in Feb and March and then I am in SE TX the rest of the winter 'splitting bees' or making new hives. Then back up to MN/ND for the summer.

I do not know which area of the country you live in but I'm sure there is some beekeeper close by if you really want them on your land. It is easier here in MN/ND with the CRP program...but a lot of CRP is coming out because cash rent is getting so lucrative.

Good luck.... :thumb:

No, that that part of Ill. I went to grad school in Charleston though.... :thumb:

Probably have to do some research and find a beekeeper close to you if you want bees on your land.

Out of curiosity, is there a graduate program specifically geared toward raising honey bees? :?

Usually entomology degees and people specialize in bees if there is a researcher that specializes in honey bees. U of Minn has honey bee research. USDA also has honey bee research stations.

Most beekeepers are just ave guys that just love working with bees. I love it. My grad degree was in Exercise Physiology...and I'm a beekeeper.... :o

Eat honey...It is nature's perfect food. It will never go bad. It will granulate but will never rot. It has a low pH level (acidic) and low moisture content so bacteria cannot grow. Honey found in Egyptian tombs was heated back to liquid form and eaten.

IMO, the 'fountain of youth' is exercise and honey.... :thumb:
