Other Elections of Interest
Any other items on your ballot of interest besides the presidential race?

Re: Other Elections of Interest
Iowa has a couple of things -
Iowa lost a house seat in the re-apportionment process so we have one of two House elections in the country where two incumbents are thrown together. Repub Tom Latham vs. Dem Leonard Boswell.
We also have Dem Christie Vilsack, wife of former Iowa gov. and current US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, challenging incumbent Repub. Steve King.
Also have a retention vote on one of the judges that ruled in favor of same sex marriage.

Mainly for the open Senate seat.
Tim Kaine vs. George Allen has been pretty interesting.

And the ugliest ads are from the Flake supporters (Not from the Flake camp).
It is sad, because Flake is not a bad person, and would be a Decent Senator, if elected. Just wish they would stick to the issues.
That and the ads against Penzone that Arpaio is putting out - both feature accusations of female abuse that have been proven to be lies (in the Penzone case, he is the one that called the police on his ex).

In Montana we have Senate Tester (D) (incumbent) vs. Denny Rehberg our current Congressman, a very ugly race so far.
Governor- Steve Bullock (D) vs. Rick Hill (R) - another pretty ugly race.

Interesting that I recently have been seeing Mitt doing a commercial for Denny. Positive commercial
I wonder if BHO will do one for Tester

Re: Other Elections of Interest
CA has a ton of tax increases on the ballot. Most of which are for the "ailing schools and poor children" as if 52% of the states budget isn't enough already. Also a ballot measure to ban automatic paycheck deductions for special interests (both union and private). Some other stuff too but those are the main ones imo.
Locally here in SD we have a close mayoral race. A gay repub who has led a lot of the public employee pension reforms up against a long time worthless dem Federal Representative and career politician who is only running because he got gerrymandered out of his seat. I haven't followed the race that closely because I have known who I am voting for, but I think it's neck and neck heading into Tuesday.
Should be an interesting election on many levels.

Re: Other Elections of Interest
On a local level, the one that's gotten the most press in MD is Question 7 on building one more casino and adding table games to all the ones that already exist. There have easily been as many ads for this issue as for the POTUS. We also get all the Kaine/Allen ads which have been rather ugly. I can't stand either guy in VA.
We also have Question 6 for gay marriage, but it's been WAY overshadowed by other issues. It think it will pass fairly easily.
And I posted earlier in the year the most extreme gerrymandering I've ever seen in my life is up for a vote... suffice it to say I will NOT be voting for this question.
Our Senate vote won't be close. We have an independent that is going to come close to beating the R. Cardin didn't even have to campaign and will win 55-25-20.
Our House vote however will be a tight one between Delaney (D) and our incumbent Bartlett (R). Should come down to the wire.

Re: Other Elections of Interest
Only thing in PA of interest, assuming Obama doesn't somehow lose PA in the presidential race, is the Senate seat.
Didn't seem to be much of an issue as the GOP guy, Tom Smith, was as unknown of a candidate as someone could find (and the generic name doesn't help either) and Bob Casey rode his father's name to a resounding victory 6 years ago. Problem is, Bob Casey might be one of the dumbest people in government (yes, I understand the breadth of that statement) and he's pretty not made a peep in Washington for the past 6 years. He's almost a throwback to the days of party bosses and just being a figurehead with a well respected name who can win an election and then do whatever he's told to do once in office. Apparently people have begun to notice that Casey hasn't seemed to do very much over the past 6 years and despite the fact that Tom Smith is a tea party guy and a former coal mine owner, he actually has a pulse in this race. Even Rendell has criticized Casey by saying that he's run a terrible campaign. Still a long shot for Smith to win, but he wasn't even a long shot 3 months ago. I'm not sure who I'll vote for, though - Smith is a bit of a typical right wing whacko and Casey, like I said, doesn't have a brain.
We haven't had the best Senate candidates in PA since the days of Heinz and a younger Specter. I blame Santorum for making it all go downhill - he was like Casey in terms of intelligence, but, unlike Casey, he actually spoke on ocassion, to his detriment.

BTW, I agree with Voter ID. MOF, everyone should pass a civics exam before being allowed to vote.

I'm voting for the voter ID bill. The arguments against it are pretty weak IMO. Cost? If someone can buy a case of beer, carton of smokes, couple gallons of fuel....my point is that cost is not an issue.
I also think the Marriage Amendment will pass.

My county has a capital improvement vote for our schools. Essentially, our area has been developed and the impact fees have not been sufficient. We need to build more schools and hire more teachers. The cost is in the millions and the money will come from an increase in property taxes (on average, $60). I will vote yes. We need to repair and construct new schools.

Sounds like the same lies I see on the commercials to pass more school bonds here in CA. Difference being between the two states is 52% of our budget is already squandered on education. Why they need more money here in CA for education is beyond me.Ibanez wrote:My county has a capital improvement vote for our schools.
