Amnesty was a huge mistake. No way around that.

Have you ever heard of Tip O'Neil and Dan Rostenkowski?

Reagan envisioned a true free trade agreement, not the NAFTA negotiated by the Bush and Clinton administrations. Have you ever seen an actual copy of NAFTA? I have. It's enormous. It has nothing to do with free trade. It is managed trade. There is a big difference.

No doubt greatest president of the last 50 years. That fact is beyond reproach.

I normally agree with you and can't tell whether you're being sarcastic or not but...

I'm sure Reagan and Obama will both ride the coattails of their charisma for quite some time and their "greatness" is of course a complete and utter myth. If there were one single philosophy you could blame our economic problems on it would be Reaganomics.

But there has been a concerted effort to rewrite history:
All the sweetness and yuks masked a somewhat startling fact — that by enshrining a national myth about Reagan so soon after his presidency, while he was still alive (albeit incapacitated), and for purposes that were essentially partisan in nature, Norquist, Kamburowski and their powerful and growing list of conservative allies were pulling off a maneuver that was unprecedented in American history. Other presidents and leaders had surely been mythologized — a walk from Norquist’s office near K Street to the National Mall would show that — but not while they were still living, or in a manner so blatantly calculated in the very spirit of a presidency built around effective public relations. This may have been American history, circa 1984 — but as if the textbook had been authored by Orwell himself. As young Kamburowski said flatly to the Hartford Courant in December 1997: “The left has been far better at rewriting history. Conservatives just haven’t paid that much attention to this kind of thing.”

Have to hand it to Norquist. The dude is definitely a player.

Some people have no clue as they bow to the altar of government as they think it is the arbiter of "fairness" and "social justice". The people who complain and cry about the free market as if it is a game rigged by capitalists when in fact it is the government who has their thumbs on the scale. :coffee:

Well, we only have Dick Nixon, George Bush daddy, and George Bush retarded child in the last 40 years for him to rise above.

He was obviously the greatest president in the last 50 years, among Republicans.

I saw a bumper sticker on a beat-to-fuck minivan the other day that said "Proud to Be a Reagan Republican".

I think we should chip in and get Psychocat a "Proud to Be a Carter Democrat" sticker.

I didn't agree with everything Reagan did. Like one thing you didn't mention that I really didn't agree with was cutting out of Lebanon after the 241 US service people were killed in that bombing. Also, I heard that the guards were not allowed to have bullets in their guns prior to the attack. Couldn't believe Reagan would oversee an operation where the guards couldn't have bullets in their guns and couldn't believe he pulled out after the bombing.

To me what he did greatly contributed to the perception that if you draw a little blood on the United States the United States will cut and run. And I think that perception has made people more willing to challenge us as well as more willing to believe they can win even if they're totally outgunned.

But, on balance, I liked his world view. No question that his desire was to diminish the influence of the Federal government overall. Also liked his philosophy on Supreme Court Justices, though he made a huge mistake in nominating Sandra Day O'Connor.
