The "Credibility" of the TSN Poll

Post by bluehenbillk »

I think TSN has done an outstanding job over the years in covering & promoting FCS football. Going back to Tony Moss, most of the people they've had work there have done a great job. Look I've been on internet message boards for over a decade now & have probably posted between all of them in excess of 20,000 times & have heard and joked about "East Coast Bias".

I don't know how else to explain this:

Cal Poly at 11, Lehigh at 8. Both teams got three first-pace votes? ?

Both teams are undefeated, one plays in the Patriot League & one plays in the Big Sky.

Cal Poly has a FBS win on its resume this year, Lehigh's best win is against sub-.500 Liberty.

Cal Poly has won all but one FCS game this year by double digits, Lehigh struggled in 5 of their 8 contests.

It's amazing to see people's interpretations about football teams, amazing... :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

I agree. And on the opposite of that why is Montana State #4!? Who have they beaten?! Cal Poly and them should be flipped. The poll favors teams who have been successful in the past. Why is Sam Houston 5, they haven't done crap this year. But they were in the championship last year so voters assume they're still top 5. And I realize this is biased, but NDSU should be ahead of Georgia Southern. Both have 1 FCS loss, NDSU has an FBS win and is higher on the GPI.

And you'll also notice Northern Iowa is receiving votes. They have 1 Division 1 win on the year....

At this point it's painfully clear they need to entirely revamp how they run this thing, or just scrap it entirely. Both the CS.com and AGS polls are so much better it's embarrassing.

The Indy St voter had SDSU at #11. They have ONE remotely credible win (Indy St), and just got rocked by UNI. :ohno:

If we went with who teams have lost to, SUU would be ranked in the top 10 every year.

Right. And I never said that UNI should be ranked. All I am asking is for people to have some perspective.

You can't, on one hand, take issue with Patriot teams because "they don't play anybody", while, on the other hand, say a team like UNI is ranked to high because "they only have 1 D1 win" when they have played the (arguably) most difficult schedule in the country. You have to consider who teams have played, who they have lost to, and who they have beaten.

It always comes down to this question as voters, are you ranking teams on "how good" you think the teams are, or are you ranking them based on "# wins and losses"???

If you don't think they should be ranked, then why post anything defending them in any way? Losses are losses. EIU beat SIU.

It doesn't matter who they have played if they haven't beaten any of the teams. Now SDSU was a good win, and if they can win some more they may deserved to be ranked. But a team with 2 wins (only 1 D-1) just doesn't deserve to be ranked...

I'm a big fan of the phrase "play somebody," but in UNI's case I'm going to say, "beat somebody."

This. The Griz have played and lost to some pretty good teams, but the bottom line is we're 3-5, and shouldn't be ranked or receiving votes.

Exactly, there are so many teams with good records and impressive wins you can't discredit them just because they play in an easier conference. Now an undefeated Lehigh may not beat anyone impressive and will never be in my Top 5 but they were respectable against us last year in the playoffs and I think they may be even better this year. Northern Iowa will give anyone in the country a tough game, but if they can't pull one out at the wire it doesn't mean much.

Yes, it does matter who they played. You can't argue that, if at the same time, you are going to knock teams for winning games against perceived inferior teams. You can't argue for/against the schedule for wins, but not for losses.

Again, if you don't win, I don't care who you play. A team with some tough wins and a few tough losses will be ahead of a team with no tough wins but no losses; however, Northern Iowa, just has lots of tough losses.

And you can't argue for a team with 1 win. At least we can imagine these other teams with wins might be good.

I understand what you are saying, but there's not much context to a 1-5 team, unless you want to compare to Missouri State.
