"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I've found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don't believe that the earth's but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That's what the Bible says.

This guy is the Republican Chairman
Of the House Science Committee
1) He's a liar - he is NOT a scientist (What would Jesus say about that lying stuff..?)
2) He's completely insane - I'm not saying stupid, I'm saying insane
This is why we're going nowhere fast as a country
because both of our Parties provide us with a collection of lying deceitful nutballs

The problem is not that we are going "nowhere" fast but rather we are going backward. And in my usual negative way I am thinking that maybe the country is full of "lying deceitful nutballs" and it's only inevitable that some of them would end up in some sort of a leadership role.Chizzang wrote:This guy is the Republican Chairman

Apparently, he's from Atlanta, went to the house in 2007 on a special election and also received a career service award from Taliban State College. Wonderful.

Re: GOP Congressman: evolution is lie from Hell
I think that he is. At the very least he's certainly well trained in the sciences. He has a B.S. in Chemistry and a MD. I think that the typical MD working day in and day out to diagnose then treat illness is an "applied scientist." Even if he's not actively doing that now (and I don't know that he isn't) he certainly did it for many years.1) He's a liar - he is NOT a scientist (What would Jesus say about that lying stuff..?)
And he's certainly not stupid. You're not going to be stupid and get through the curriculum you'd have to go through to get a Chemistry degree while maintaining a high enough GPA to get into medical school then get through medical school.
I don't know why he thinks that "...evolution and embryology and the big bang theory..." are taught to "...understanding that they need a savior." I took evolution and embryology courses and never had that impression.
But I guarantee you he knows a lot more about evolution and embryology than the overwhelming majority of people in general and especially people in the news media who are now going to label him as "ignorant" or put quotation marks around the reference to himself as a scientist. Also more endowed with natural intelligence than most of those people too. I wouldn't be surprised if less than half of them could make it through a Chemistry degree curriculum with a GPA high enough to get into medical school. And that's being generous. I"d say less than 15% of the population has the natural intelligence to do that. Just a guess on the percentage but I'd bet if anything it's overstated.
People who think that those who adopt his point of view have to be stupid or more ignorant than others (everybody's ignorant to some extent) really need to disabuse themselves of that mythology. It's quite possible for someone to be smarter and more educated than you are yet still disagree with you.

Broun's comments were greeted with applause, and they probably reflect how a lot of his constituents feel about the same issues.
I'm quite sure his district has all sorts of "scientists", accountants, engineers...really "smart", highly educated people with advanced degrees. This is clearly a case of religion making you "dumb".

I know that's saracasm but I'm confident it's objectively false. Bush's SAT score was 1206 and he took it prior to 1974. You can see estimates of IQ based on per-1974 SAT ...which is a "g loaded" standardized test... score at http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/Pre1974SAT.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Bush's IQ would be estimated at between 129 and 130. A 129 would put him at about the 96.6th percentile of the intelligence distribution. Since it's an estimate there's some error. But there's not going to be enough to change the basic picture. Bush is not a genius but he is in the "Superior" range of IQ is is way smarter than the general population average.Depends on your definition of "stupid" John. George W. Bush has an MBA from Harvard and was POTUS. I guarantee you only less than 15% of the population is stupider than George W. Bush.
I don't know why people continue to say Bush is stupid when there is a readily available objective measurement that says otherwise. It's like saying somebody is short even though when you pull the tape out they measure 6'6".

See my edit. And it goes beyond that one measurement. He also got through college and got through graduate school. Again, that might not mean you're the brightest person on the planet. But you're not going to do it if you're at or below the 15th percentile of the intelligence distribution. I know "15%" was hyperbole. But Bush is not stupid.No...he's not.

Perhaps. But it's not because he's stupid. And not because he's ignorant either. His position is not a result of him knowing less about what the scientific establishment has to say about evolution and the big bang theory than most of us do and it's not because he's got a lower IQ than most of us do.Somebody said: There is none so blind as he who will not see. He's not stupid - I agree with you - He's just wrong (period) and a liar
Beyond that the rest of what you babble on about is called an "apologist retort"
The guy is clinically insane
and thirdly: To be a fundamentalist - every word is the word of God believer you must first define which Bible you're using as the definitive Word of God because they vary wildly...
Believe every word of which Bible..?
He's clearly trapped in dogma - which means living with the results of other peoples thinking
Somebody preached a bible to him and he believes every word.... Why..?
Was it the correct version of the Bible - how does he know..?
When someone says "The Bible says this" the first thing I think is "Which Bible"
There are over 50 different common translations with wildly ranging definitions
What they're saying is: I believe what I'm told - because The person who told me believes it
and on and on...
If you're going to believe the bible is the actual word of God - you should do research on it just like a scientist would do if he was told something - check it out... do the work - don't just buy the dogma and live inside somebody elses ideas - create your own
in closing:
He's kinda nuts... frankly and that's plain to see

We knock the fundies for blind faith; that they trust without verifying, and yet we encourage this characteristic... we cultivate it even- in the electorate. It is the bread and butter of both political parties. Right now, the ads from the right are correctly criticized for being lacking in detail (even though hope and change isn't exactly detailed either) but some of the stuff coming from the left right now is high comedy.

But the point I'm making is - if you're going to completely reject some basic scientific foundations - because of the infallible word of God said so in an ancient text you might want to kinda understand the text it came from...
Does he mean the 1611 King James translation
Which is a completely different version of The infallible word of God than previous versions
So then you must be saying: I believe the Church England's overwrite of the Greek Erasmus version from 1516 is actually The definitive Word of God
I could go on... the hilarity is beyond punchline after punchline
Suffice to say:
Some are trapped in dogma, which is living with the results of other peoples thinking - because you're incapable of doing your own

Re: GOP Congressman: evolution is lie from Hell
I didn't dispute that, John. I said he's a dumbass, albeit a highly educated one. I spend a lot of time around phds, and they aren't that exceptional outside of their own narrow specialty. A lot of them seem to feel that because they have a phd in one field that they are an expert on any subject.JohnStOnge wrote:Perhaps.
You got to exaggerate wildly, bubba. All you've done here is tell the truth...
