Big Sky Predictions 9-29

Post by JALMOND »

36-5 so far for the season, but it could be better (should be better). Another attempt at perfection and I certainly can use it. Going out on a limb in some games, so we'll see how it goes. As usual, all are my opinion only and they should generate some interesting discussion. Six games and Northern Colorado is off.

CP at UND---The Mustangs encountered a tough UC-Davis team but was able to get the win at home. The "Dakotans" got a great road win at Sacramento State and they are on the verge of a great season here...UND 38, CP 31.

UM at EWU---Hard to imagine but this game may be a must win for the Grizzlies after their head scratching loss at home to Northern Arizona. The Eagles held off a stubborn Weber State team to win on the road. Do the Grizzlies get a win on the road and salvage the season? Uh, no...EWU 35, UM 17.

MSU at SUU---The Bobcats showed that they are still dominate in a win against, well, Northern Colorado. The Thunderbirds had to rally for a road win against Portland State. Home field should help, but it is the Bobcats across the line...MSU 35, SUU 24.

PSU at NAU---The Vikings really wanted last week's game at home against Southern Utah but came up short. The Lumberjacks really wanted last week's game at Montana and they got it. Who wants this game more? Better believe it is the Jacks...NAU 38, PSU 17.

Sac State at ISU---Remember when the Hornets beat Colorado? That was before they struggled at home against Northern Colorado and lost to North Dakota. The Bengals are fresh off of a resounding defeat at FBS power Nebraska. Can the Hornets win here?...ISU 38, Sac State 21.

WSU at UCD---The Wildcats have not won a game yet this season, but they have played some pretty stiff competition. The Aggies have shown they have a defense that can shut down almost anyone as Cal Poly almost found out last week. Can the defense do enough here to get the win?...WSU 21, UCD 10.

I don't think the spread will be anywhere near that wide, but I'm picking EWU for the win....

While I sure hope we don't lose by three scores, he's not really going out on much of a limb there.

We haven't really shown that we're able to play in the second half at all this year, it's already cost is two games against teams that might be worse than EWU.

If we can actually play our game and end up with only one turnover or less, we've got a shot. Two or more turnovers, and this game could get ugly.

I guess I wouldn't be too surprised by an 18 point win, but I'd still be a little surprised. Griz always play us tough and give us their best shot. It's like their superbowl. That is unless they have an NAU hangover. 8-)

Nope. Cal Poly's defense will be the difference in the game, as they rank 3rd in the BSC against the pass, and 2nd against the run. UND ranks 9th against the run, allowing about 200ypg... whereas CP averages nearly 330ypg rushing. UND will get their points, but I don't imagine their offense seeing the field a whole lot with CP controlling the clock, keeping the ball on the ground.

Sac/ISU is an interesting game too. ISU is ranked 1st in both passing offense and defense, and dead last in both run offense and run defense. Sac is middle of the pack all around. An ISU upset wouldn't surprise me, but I think Sac takes it, with their QB Safron playing pretty smart ball.

Looks good on paper, but weird things happen inside barns. The barn in Pocatello and the barn in Flagstaff. And that barn in Grand Forks is capable of being just as weird. I for one would rather not see any more barns in the conference. This is the Big Sky Conference, not the Big Roof Conference. Show off the Sky!

I think you're right here, but I suspect that there may be a bit of a reaction to the last couple of weeks in that there's at least a chance that Safron may spend much or all of this game pulling splinters out of his rear end. Even if he DOES get the start, he'll probably have a VERY short leash. Look for Mason Magleby to have his day in the sunshine in Pocatello.

Possibly. I could definitely see them rotating, at least for the first half.

Safron wasnt the intended starter, Magleby, the UNR transfer, was. However, he was injured in Spring ball and wasnt able to play until last week. Sperbeck put him in in the fourth quarter on Sac's last drive, he looked really good. Magleby will probably be the starter on Saturday. He has a much better arm and makes better decisions on the field.

Sac's RB's can tear up the field, all of them. Graham (power back), McCowan (speed), and Ellis (short yardage/power). I wouldnt be surprised to see well over 200 yards rushing from Sac this weekend.

Sac State @ Idaho State - ?

Montana State @ Southern Utah - MSU

Portland State @ Northern Arizona - PSU

Montana @ Eastern Washington - EWU

Cal Poly @ North Dakota - UND

Weber State @ Manure Pile - WSU

I don't think that is quite accurate. They're many of us viewing it totally realistic and you have obviously not read my posts on other threads. You appear to be cherry picking certain posters to jab. I wouldn't argue JALMONDS pick or score in the EWU game. It is possible that it will be a lower spread or maybe even a win is possible but I would be hard pressed to provide an arguement against the pick.

So, Herky, you're saying that HFA will be enough for UND to take out CP? There could be an argument for that if the Mustangs come down with a bad case of jet lag. But CP has a history of winning games on the road east of the Rockies. I think I have to side with them.

A lot of good games on the slate this weekend and a lot of ones that could go either way.

CP at UND - 28-24 UND's defense struggles mightily against the run, which CP controlling the clock, it will be hard for UND to get their offense going. Should be a great game to watch nonetheless.

UM at EWU - 34-20 Sound like UM has issues throwing the ball down the field. That will be an issue if they fall behind by a couple of scores. I think this game stays close for much of it though.

MSU at SUU - 27-24 MSU could have found their groove after last week. I think SUU keeps it close. An SUU upset wouldn't surprise me either. Another intriguing match-up.

PSU at NAU - 35-23 PSU is struggling, NAU isn't. NAU catching this one at home will help too. I think Bauman will have another big game against the struggling Viking defense.

Sac State at ISU - 31-24 ISU still missing some pieces to the puzzle. Not sure who starts at QB for the Hornets but if Safron gets the nod and shits down his leg the entire game (again) a loss wouldn't surprise me. This is ISU's first FCS game so I'm not really sure what to expect.

WSU at UCD - 38-13 WSU found their offense and although cal davis has a respectable defense, they have yet to find consistency on offense. WSU should wear them down as the game progresses when cal davis' offense sputters again and leaves their defense on the field for too long. This loss will eliminate cal davis from playoff contention.

The last thing I want to see is rotating QB's again. That usually means you have no QB's. My guess is the coaches will go with Safron then go with Magleby if the offense starts off flat. Hopefully it is not too late by then (I would be completely OK with a Magleby start). Not sure what we will get from Magleby but his playing time last week was in garbage time so the production is pretty meaningless. However he did throw a good accurate ball on his handful of passes and he did show some athleticism with a 10+ yd run.

It's definitely a breaking point for which QB to go with (imo). As much as I hope we pull down a few more wins this season, we really need one of the QB's to step up and prove they will be the guy from here on out and through next season (and the season after that if it's Safron).
