We were guilty of giving them all that crap just like everyone else. But he got very little of it at a very young age. Maybe it was enough to trigger an allergy. Too late to worry about that now.Skjellyfetti wrote:death dealer wrote:I have a child who suffers with a food allergy. We actually started avoiding processed food a few years ago for health reasons. I've talked about this before. We don't eat fast food, avoid plastics and canned foods, and stay away from processed and commercially cured meats. I like organic veggies, but would opt for conventional fresh over processed organic any day. I don't preach to others. I figure you eat your way, I'll eat mine. I do counsel patients about nutrition, particularly in relation to their children, but that's part of my job.
I sure feel lots better. I'm leaner, stronger, and it has really helped me take my cycling to the next level. There are plenty of studies about nutrition and endurance sports, so I'm sure you know what in talking about.

I dated a girl with nut allergies. Scary stuff. She had to keep an epi pen on her because if she came into contact with even the most minuscule amount of peanut residue or oil her airway would close.
It is impossible to supervise a bunch of 8 year olds in the lunch room. They get their food all over their fingers and they touch each other. I have no problem with doing away with the peanut butter in the school cafeterias, because otherwise you are just asking for a tragedy that could otherwise be prevented. I know it sucks, but it is the biological world we live in these days.
Agreed that there seem to have been an exponential increase in these types of allergies over the last 20 years.

A country that gives up a little peanut butter for security deserved neither...or something like that.
My youngest sons elementary school just banned it, but my oldest's middle school did not. I'm guessing this has to do with the threat of litigation and how a reasonable school district deals with it.

I see your point and agree somewhat with what you are saying too. But your friends daughter is a vegan by choice. She won't die if she accidentally invests a little meat. And I assume that if she is old enough to identify herself as a vegan, she's probably old enough to know not to take a bite of her friends bologna sandwich.Bison Fan in NW MN wrote:death dealer wrote:
I agree with the points you make but is that too much for any one entity to try and handle? My point is when will it stop?
My good friend's daughter is a vegan. He (my friend) didn't go into the school and raise hell because there is meat on the school lunch menu. She brings her own lunch. Parent responsibility.
Look at Bloomberg in NYC with his 16 oz limit on soft drinks. People can make up their own minds.
My point is that gov cannot be everything to everyone. Parents need to be PARENTS. I get your point about kids with bad homes and they have bad parents that do not give a crap.

If parents are so concerned about their kids coming into contact with peanuts... fucking homeschool them.
It shouldn't be on the onus of every other parent to make sure they pack their kids lunch with items that do not contain products that OTHER parents' kids are allergic to.

Lookit, but allergies arent just where the kids break out in hives or something. Anaphylactic shock from nut allergies will kill your a$$ graveyard dead quick. They might as well drink antifreeze; sh!ts poisonous to them.
Older kids shouldn't be a problem; they know enough to be careful and cognizant of what they are doing. What I am talking about is the 4-8 age group. My kids live their peanut butter, but if the school says no then I'm fine with that. I wouldn't want it on my conscience or on my daughters conscience on down the road.

Re: What the **** is going on in this country?
It can be very serious as this story about a girl who died after being given a peanut by another child illustrates:
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/AllergiesF ... FRf8VSA9vk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Nevertheless, I don't believe it's right to say no kid at a school can have a peanut product because some other kid might have a peanut allergy. A peanut allergy can mean the need for extreme vigilance at all times as it doesn't take much for some people, peanut products can be in a lot of things. Other people shouldn't have to adjust their lives to try to eliminate the risk. Here's a story of a Canadian girl who kissed her boyfriend about 9 hours after he ate peanut butter on toast then died of an allergic reaction.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4481546.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think it's probably a good idea to always have epinephrine shots handy as I think it's really hard to go through life without coming into contact with peanut products.

It kind of is though. It's a nanny state, protect everyone, litiginous society philosophy versus personal responsibility and freedom.Col Hogan wrote:because this isn't a political issue, even if you try to make it one...Tod wrote: This is not the first thread that I was surprised to find us in agreement, despite our political differences (actually, probably because of our political differences).
I still say it's the threat of lawsuits argument. Little Johnny dies from a peanut allergy at school, his parents lawyer up and the first thing they're gonna look at it what precautions the school took to avoid this. They are then going to look at the policies of other school districts. If more than a few of them have banned peanuts than you might be in a little trouble. So it's an ahhh fuck it, it ain't worth the threat situation.
A few years back, my business partnered with a church to host an easter egg hunt. The local elementary granted us permission to send fliers home with all the kids promoting it. We print the fliers, drop them off and then I get a call later that day from the school saying we need to remove the term "easter" from the flier or else they won't hand them out. The administrator apologized for the stupid policy but said it's easier for the school district to simply ban things than risk even the potential for legal action.

I don't remember know one single kid growing up that had a peanut allergy.
Kids need to walk away from the PS3 and Wii's from time to time, go outside and build up a freakin' immune system like most of us did. Why don't we just put them in a bubble with elbow/knee pads and helmets and send them out to play?
