Edison on solar:

Post by Skjellyfetti »

We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy — sun, wind and tide. ... I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.

Of course, all that is true, but just like in Edison's day, the problem with DC power distribution, as it would be from photoelectric cells, eludes us just as it eluded Edison. If we didn't have that problem Tesla and his AC wouldn't have become the accepted method for electrical distribution. Fortunately, we are a long time away until oil and coal (and natural gas) run out. Still have time to figure it out and, even more importantly, how to do it cheaply (or at least cheaper than the fossil fules it would be replacing).

We need those machines from the Matrix - they could do it. :thumb:

It eludes us... really..?
Please explain - because that probmlem was solved like 40 years ago
They're called INVERTERS (Typically diode based) They range in size from Single Home to MDU to Utility Grid Scale
but I'm curious as to why you think this DC to AC thing is such an issue..?

The money we are wasting subsidizing Warren Buffett's windmills should be spent on solar research. At least solar produces power when we need it most, unlike wind.

Algore must have some carbon credit cash laying around that could be spent on solar energy.

Wrong. :ohno:

DC is commonly used for high voltage transmission these days.
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

Way too many technological hurdles to be overcome. We couldn't possibly have solar on a large scale for at least 50 years, maybe 100. Way beyond our abilities, can't possible be done in the foreseeable future. :ohno:
