Whose quote is this?

Post by GrizFanStuckInUtah »

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

Sounds amazingly like something the empty chair said back during his senate "tenure..."

And if Romney wins, he'll do the same thing.

Politicians say what they have to say to get elected.

The Conks will tell you that it got worse under Obama. We can then have a spin filled argument regarding how true that statement is.

Things won't change under Romney. He may cut some entitlement programs, but he also says he's going to cut taxes and he's not going to cut defense spending.

Like it or not, if we're serious about the budget we need to cut everything, especially the things that currently get the most money.

Nobody actually believes that Romney is going to reduce the deficit...
They just don't like Obama and the healthcare thing terrifies them

But reducing the deficit isn't gonna happen under Romney

Simpson-Bowles is a decent start and would be better than what either party would pass in a vacuum.

I just don't think people are concerned enough about what is going to happen to this country financially if we don't get our checkbook in order.

We are all like Nero, fiddling.

I don't know if Romney can do anything about it. I don't know if Ron Paul would be ABLE to do anything about it.

What I do know is that Obama, and a large cabal of his supporters will not address it in a meaningful way. One thing is for sure, enacting the biggest entitlement program in history in the teeth of a recession is not fiscally responsible. I'd like to think Obama will pull a Clinton in a second term, but I am not optimistic.

How so?:
In that he used the Republican Congress to balance the deficit
Something neither Bush could accomplish with a Republican Congress

Please explain that..?

My opinion of Clinton wasn't very good while he was president, I was just using him as an example since he was the last Democrat before Obama. Obama has found a way to lower my expextations is what I was getting at.

Add that to Dubya cutting taxes while we were engaged in a war and you have 2 extremely fiscally irresponsible presidents in a row.

So Dubya helped you see the light that Clinton wasn't that terrible of a president?

We interrupt this thread to clarify a few things...

Cutting marginal tax rates (especially capital gains taxes) on upper income earners has time and again coincided with increased overall tax revenue. The evidence seems to indicate that the upper income earners will invest the money which increases capital for business and spurs business activity, thereby expanding the tax base (jobs) and subsequently tax receipts.

You may now return to your straw man arguments about taxation...

Capital gains are already only taxed at 15%, should we just drop it to zero?

And corporate war chests are fatter than they've ever been, why isn't that money being invested in jobs?

Because our corporate tax rates are the highest in the world and the current administration's love for all things regulation has created wide spread fear and apprehension in the business community. When the business commmunity has fear and apprehension it sits on it's cash.
