Chaos at Donk Convention
"Tonight, the Democratic National Committee suspended the rules of the convention and inserted language regarding God and the State of Israel back to its platform. They had to vote three times to do it – and they had to lie to deem it passed, even though it was clear that the measure did not pass a voice vote in the chamber. The original 2012 Democratic Party platform had excised all mention of God and Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel........."

Re: Chaos at Donk Convention
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Embarrassed by Republicans, Democrats amended their convention platform Wednesday to add a mention of God and declare that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
Many in the audience booed after the convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, ruled that the amendments had been approved despite the fact that a large group of delegates had objected. He called for a vote three times before ruling.
The party reinstated language from the 2008 platform that said "we need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential."
It also reinstated its 2008 language that Jerusalem "is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."
Democrats had approved a platform on Tuesday that made no mention of God or Jerusalem. Instead, it expressed "unshakable commitment to Israel's security."............"

Re: Chaos at Donk Convention
I was wondering what that voice vote was about. I tuned in CNN just as they were doing it, and it seemed as though the "nays" were a lot stronger than the "yeas". I watched for a bit waiting for Blitzer to explain what the vote was about, but the talking heads were silent on it.
BTW I thought Tel Aviv was the capital of Israel. That's where our embassy has always been, anyway. Shows how much I know about Israel. That said, I think it is a pretty dumb plank for a political platform on either side. We have plenty of our own problems and somebody has us by the sack to the point that we make the location of their capital a gorram political position. Both sides are in thrall and there isn't a thing we can do about it.

Well, Israel considers their capital to be Jerusalem. They've considered that to be their capital since 1950. Granted, most of the International governments don't recognize that, but Israel is clear that it is.Tod wrote:Why in the **** would Democrats or Republicans declare the Israeli capital to be Jerusalem when the capital is Tel Aviv? Why is this included as "business" at a political convention? Should they also vote on the location of military bases in foreign lands or on sanctions imposed on another country?Tod wrote:How is that our business? True but Breitbart ain't exactly Huff Po. I'll give you TP and Rolling Stone. That being said RS broke the Stanley McChrystal story and like him or not, Taibbi's financial work has been very provocative.Baldy wrote:Maybe, but you do use those stalwarts of objective media like thinkprogress and Rolling Stone.kalm wrote:

If you want to take it that far, The National Enquirer broke the John Edwards baby mama scandal, but that still didn't raise them any higher than what they are, a national tabloid.kalm wrote:True but Breitbart ain't exactly Huff Po. As to what business it is of our's? Only to the extent that it's one of the key items in the dispute between Israel and the rest of the Middle East and the Palestinian issue. You can consider, then, that it's not our problem if you also are of the mind that the political issues in the Middle East are not our problem. While I'm sure many people on these boards advocate the ostrich approach and should just bury our heads in the sand regarding foreign affairs, I don't think we can just ignore issues of significance that happen outside of our geographic borders.

Let's face it, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict won't go away in our lifetimes. Speaking bluntly, I find Barack Obama filling out a March Madness bracket more productive time than trying to mediate the Israel/Palestine conflict. I can think of 50 more important issues in this election.

I could give a sh1t where Israel's capital is. Our embassy is in Tel Aviv, and State doesn't have the budget to move it right now anyway.bluehenbillk wrote:Why are you stuck in the 1980's? Is Russia our biggest threat still as well?GannonFan wrote:

As for our greatest geopolitical enemy, it isn't China. Just because the media has been focused on Iran and China does not make them the biggest threats to Western stability.

Re: Chaos at Donk Convention
I never said it was an important issue and I never said we have any hope of solving it. But it is an issue, no matter how minor or unsolvable it is right now. And I agree, there are countless things more important that this, but it's a line item on a party's convention platform - every single issue gets brought up. These platforms are laundry lists of things that I'm not even sure the people writing them care about. Anything other than the economy right now is a collosal waste of time to talk about, but conventions are, by their nature, collosal wastes of time.bluehenbillk wrote:Why are you stuck in the 1980's? Frankly, my only comment on this topic was that Jerusalem is Israel's capital, as they see it, and to correct the guy who was adamant that Tel Aviv is the capital. Geography ignorance annoys me.

Re: Chaos at Donk Convention
Jerusalem is the claimed Capitol of Israel, and was designated as such when Israel captured East Jerusalem in the 1967 war (from Jordan). Since then it has been proclaimed as the capital.
However, it is regarded as an occupied territory by most countries, and therefore every foreign embassy is in Tel Aviv, the recognized capital.
Once again, political semantics are going to cost us a truckload of money, because if we become vocal about Jerusalem I suspect we are going to be asked to put our money where our mouths are.
