I like the idea of the Common Sense party but you guys are going to need to be tolerant of raging fiscal hawks like me if you want my vote. Oh, and stay away from my porn. Oh, and a little nuke reactor in every town, too. Ask D about that one I gave him a long drunken lecture on it.
First order of business for the Common Sense party: gut federal employee benefits and pensions. :kisswink:
Already done! My retirement is three-pronged, the total adding up to 70% of my salary:

TSP
Pension
Social Security

Right now, the only one on track is the hard pension. At the current rate I will retire after 25 years when I am 65 and I'll be pulling down a 50% annuity at best.

I think fiscal responsibility is good common sense, but if by fiscal hawk you mean spend no money, collect no funds then we won't see eye to eye. Someone has to govern, that takes money, and governing is far more than making sure no one messes with anyone else's ****. There are duties that only the government is going to fulfill, they cost money, and you have to raise enough funds to pay for them. Does that mean you have to pay more for it than it would draw on the open market? No. But you have to pay for it. Libraries, museums, public parks....all would not exist w/o public funds, none necessarily directly benefit business, all make for a richer culture and better quality of life. These are very poor examples I realize. A military is another.
No, by fiscal hawk I mean no frivolous spending. Budget surpluses applied to the debt instead of the executive's slush fund. And I can think of about 10 agencies off the top of my head that can be defended and nobody will know they are gone.

The thing is, about 85 percent of all government revenue is spent on things that we dont need, or programs that do not work. It would take only the creativity of a severely retarded monkey to harmlessly cut 50% of the Federal budget.

Heck I could trim hundreds and hundreds of billions on overseas military bases alone.

No... I believe you are wrong there
What you believe is not provable
What I believe is 100% fact

We have the 18th ranked education system among the worlds industrialized nations... That's a FACT

I agree, it makes zero sense that we have the best and most envied university system in the world, while having a primary education system that is nowhere near the top. Hell, it's gotten so bad that oil companies are producing commercials lamenting the problem.

Indeed...
Why anybody would bother "defending" our 5-12 school system is beyond me...
K through 4 seems fine I guess, it's hard to say, because it requires such a delicate sensitive individual (and rightly so) to handle children - I have all the respect in the world for those teachers

But by the time the kid is 11 years old - it's on - it's go time, let the culling and dividing begin
and certainly by time they enter High School the "system should know what they've got regarding each kid

Anyway... who cares - I'm old and none of this actually matters

You're absolutely right. Johnny wants to be a mechanic/plumber/farmer just like his dad and grandpa. But we make him take calculus, foreign language, read Shakespeare, etc. when all he wants to do is tear apart the car/furnace/tractor. He doesn't want to learn that stuff and he doesn't need too. And we wonder why he does poorly in school. And then the feds penalize the school because Johnny isn't doing well. And don't forget the extra administrator or two to file all the paperwork with the feds to show how bad the school is doing. :ohno:

JFC of course it's just my opinion...no need to go all JSO with the stats on me. :tothehand:

In all honesty, your latter post and HI5's follow up are correct. We need more of a Finnish model where the wheat is seperated from the chaff around 8th or 9th grade and education becomes more specialized towards academia or the trades. But BOTH should still require an increased focus on civics and personal finance.

There...now I'VE solved it...you're welcome!

But Barry Sortero says every American should have a college degree.

Oh, and most Education majors go into it because it's an easy degree to get == lots of partying in college and still able to graduate==only having to work 9 months a year==working until 3:30-4:00 every day, getting two weeks off at Christmas, Spring break, etc., etc. Cake job and it attracts a lot of slackers.

Tell me about it. It's like credit union CEO's. Start out as tellers and work their way up to the "boardroom" or got an AA degree from the local CC...

But no, I'm not gonna bite. :kisswink:
