Carroll College at Portland State

Post by JALMOND »

Kickoff scheduled for 5 pm from Jeld Wen Field in downtown Portland. The opener for the Vikings as they get set to welcome the Fighting Saints of Carroll College. Carroll is an NAIA school located in Helena, Montana and is a long time member of the Frontier Conference. While this is the first game for the Vikings, Carroll sits at 1-0, having beaten Montana State-Northern last week, 31-6. Carroll is led by senior running back Chance Demaris, who many Big Sky schools would have loved to have in their backfield. The Vikings start this year without Connor Kavanaugh and Cory McCaffrey, but welcome back receivers Nevin Lewis and Justin Monahan among others. Also, they got quarterback Colin Ramirez from Butte Community College in California, who broke Aaron Rodgers single season touchdown passes record there. The Saints are coached by long time head man, Mike Van Diest, while the Vikings have Nigel Burton back. Gametime temps should be upper 70's and clear.

"Bump for the pols"??! What the hell does that mean?! It was a predictably messy game, with PSU starting a freshman QB. 38-20 and it could have been higher. Brown out - couldn't be worse. The perils of playing a gimme. On the other hand, UND's Starting QB is also on crutches. Sigh.

You played an NAIA team and the game was still in doubt going into the 4th quarter. You aren't challenging for the Big Sky title, period. :coffee:

Calling it a knee "sprain" for now and will be reevaluated next week. Carroll kid took out Brown's plant foot on the first PAT. Didn't even look like he was going for the block, just took Brown out. Cheap shot. :ohno:

38-20 is what it is. Carroll has a good team, we looked rusty and were fortunate to get the win. The defense looked great in containing Demaris, except for one big run in the second quarter. Unfortunately, Demaris hurt his knee on the play and was not a factor after that. All the Carroll players looked like they were having problems with cramping. As with most of these interdivisional games, the team with the most schollys usually comes through in the fourth and that was what we did tonight. Lot of things to work on. Except for Brown, no major injuries, which is good, but Brown's will no doubt be not good.

Pretty happy with how Carroll played. 20 points and 343 yards of total offense is nothing to hang your head at.

I think we did well, too. Carroll is not Lindenwood, they are practically a fixture in their national championship game every year and they have some Big Sky caliber talent on that team (LB Bloomquist is quite a hitter). I think we showed what everyone thought, that the elite NAIA schools are still 3 touchdowns below your average Big Sky team. I knew this was not going to be like Southern Oregon last year, that we will probably have a battle on our hands for the first half. Burton clearly wanted to get a chance to see what everyone could do and didn't have that luxury until halfway through the fourth quarter.
