I got my morality from my parents. My mother was religious and my father wasn't; both were very moral.

IMO, most people get their morality from their parents. Some parents will use their religion or their church as a tool to help teach that morality but it is quite possible to raise a moral child without the help of a religion.
That's what Cap'n Cat is doing and with great success.

You can thank Christianity for setting the guidelines of morality.

I am funny, for I have the threads to prove it.

As to your comment, Christianity obviously didn't invent morality, but they most certainly did spread a unified morality to the Western world.

You think Atheism gave us rules of what is right and wrong? How about Animism?

Capn needs to own up that he can thank the thing he despises most for setting our current morality system.

No more so than Christianity.

You don't have to be Christian to be moral, and being Christian doesn't make you moral. There is nothing wrong with being Christian, but don't take credit for stuff that doesn't belong to you.

Morality was spread by people who were moral, some of whom were Christian. Christians also brought us the Crusades and the Inquisition. The Christians that settled the New World brought us the Salem Witch trials, wiped out the native population and had slaves. Our founding fathers, many of whom were Christian, went out of their way to separate Church and State when setting up our govenment. They wouldn't have done that if they were convinced that you had to be Christian on order to be moral.

Nice try. Crusades and Inqusition.

I am talking about the origin of morality. Name me one other religion or movement that was instrumental in implementing morality?

I never said there weren't issues in the past, I am talking about how morality owes it current system to Christianity.

And you keep missing the point. I never said that morality was 2000 years old (I did in a post, but deleted before I realized I had misspoke), but what I said was that the implementation of morality is due to Christianity. You can site all the instances of a heavy hand you like, but those instance wouldn't be instances unless a standard was in place.

Christianity established the criteria.

Capn needs to own up.

What religion or movement did more to establish the criteria for being moral?

Where is the cricket smiley?

I disagree with that statement. You are giving Christianity too much credit. Morality was evolving before there were Christians and Christianity owes much of it's morality to the Romans and Greeks who were around long before Christ.

Jesus gets as much credit for morality than Zeus or Jupiter.

You know I welcome the disagreement. But have you considered the fact that both Greeks and Romans had very little value for human life. Spartans left weak children to die and infantcide was common (men drowned girls just because they weren't boys). Humans were routinely bludgeoned to death or mauled by wild animals in the gladitorial arena.

The greatest of the thinkers at the time (Seneca to Cicero) saw nothing wrong with these practices, but Christianity banned them.

Women had shit for status in those times.

Christianity is the main reason for morality. If you don't believe that, I can't convince you otherwise. Admittedly, I have joined human value with morality, but the two do go hand in hand.

Capn needs to own up.

Christianity banned gladiators, but was okay with the inquistion, the Crusades, witch trials and slavery. You aren't proving that Christians are moral, but you are proving that they are hypocrites. With friends like you...

When was the Christian morality imposed? When did the events you speak happen?

See? Christianity already imposed the morals hundreds of years before the indiscretions you speak of. Besides, as previously stated, the actions of a few do not make it the movement of the masses.

Christianity was, and still is the moral compass of our lives.

That is true irony. Listening to the blathering of atheists and how superior they are, only to show that their foundation is based upon Christian principles. Irony at it's finest.

Sometimes people get in the way and impose their will and claim it's Christian when it's not, aka false prophets.

Even if the Christians imposed their will later, which they did, it still doesn't mean that Christianity isn't the driving force of morality in the Western world today.

So tired of people pulling shit out of their asses (no pun), and then not being able to defend their statement.

Christianity is the most amazing force that the Western world has ever known. Not saying it will be forever, but at this point in time, nothing even comes close.

Time for Atheists to put up, or shut up, for atheism has brought us nothing. Case closed. /thread
