New Rising Star in the GOP

Post by SuperHornet »

Making big headlines now is the mayor of Saratoga Springs, UT. Her name is Mia Love, and she is the first Hatian-American to hold office in Utah County, UT. Love is running for the new 4th House District in UT. Word on the street is that she has been endorsed by John McCain, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, and Ann Romney.

Love is reportedly "outraged" that the Obama Campaign would allow Joe Biden to tell a predominantly Black audience that GOP policies would put African-Americans "in chains." "I'm not a victim -- and Joe BIden's comments certainly do not affect me, she told Greta Van Susteren on her TV show. She thinks that the current administration is promoting racial division, and it is time for people to stand up against it. In Love's opinion, Biden was "ignit[ing] hatred" for "political gain."

Love is attending the GOP National Convention as a UT delegate voting for Romney.

Mia Love looks like she's going to go far!

Doesn't count, because the mayor of San Antonio doesn't count for the Dems.

Doesn't count for what? Love is about to be elected to the House. What doesn't count about that?

I went and listened to her the other day, she is very sharp and articulate. My wife and I were around after the meeting as we were helping a Pearl Harbor survivor get back to his vehicle and she was very approachable. I personally don't think she is going to be elected even though I believe she should be. The guy she is running against is a complete tool and should be publically tarred and feathered for his voting record. But he is the incumbent and his family is “famous” and ingrained in the system in Utah. There is no other way a democrat gets elected to national offices from Utah any other way. I am not in her district but I really hope she can make it in there, she has worked hard and deserves it. :thumb:

She is a Mormon.
She can't be "that bright" then...
I'm sure she's articulate and savvy and all that
But how does a black person belong to a religion that didn't (and largely still doesn't) believe that you were a human being until 1973... when God spoke to the White Guy in charge in Salt lake (you can't even make this up) and said it was okay now and black people are Humans as of "that day in 1973"

Perhaps she subscribes to the better attributes of the religion. You know, the ones that are commonly shared between almost all world religions? Like loving your neighbor and all that? The same ones that are usually overlooked by most religious adherents?

Perhaps indeed...
But the levels of cognitive dissonance required to be psychologically aligned to make that leap are astounding

I've worked with a metric ton of Mormons over the years
And completely enjoyed them as human beings and citizens, never had a problem

One guy (Mormon co-worker) explained how he "saw" non-Mormons
It was charming and simple, something like: Those who were not yet shown the light or something like that
Then I explained how I saw Mormons: As harmless sufferers of a debilitating form of Mental Retardation...

I have to admit our relationship changed a bit after that

Such open-mindedness (I'll be sure to take that into account in the future when I read your posts.)........  :suspicious:

And no, I don't go to curch in Utah but I have a pretty decent idea living in Utah what mormons are like and I'd strongly disagree.

You are referring to the levels of cognitive dissonance to make leaps of faith like believing Father Bob really does turn that Sutter's Home into the blood of a 2000 years dead Bohemian?

Or that what you do in this life determines whether you come back to earth as an insect, bull, dog or human?

Or that if you die in the service of your religion that you will be assigned 72 as yet un-deflowered maidens?

Is that the cognitive dissonance you speak of?

Agreed in that generally speaking Mormons make good coworkers. You can't throw a rock where I work without hitting a BYU grad.

That is precisely the disconnect I'm speaking of...
But this one in particular included God speaking to a guy directly in Utah 1973
It was quite a break through for all human kind - the universe even

I could have sworn that not only did God once take the form a burning bush to talk to a wandering hermit, he also addressed Peter in the familiar and told him about all the crap liberals are going to put the world through.

Pretty sure he paid Mohammed a visit once or twice too.

Don't even get started on all the angels he has sent down from time to time to "warn a brotha".

The CLDS is hardly more goofy than any other religion just because their chat session with man himself occurred more recently.

As we all know it's one thing to believe something that was "handed down" through antiquity (or whatever)
sketchy, but common...

It's entirely something else to believe that you walk among those who actively speak directly to God
But whatever - defend them and apologize for them as much as you want - you own 'em
You might as well get used to pretending it's all logical and reasonable
because they are becoming the Republican Party

(and that's funny)

Hey, I don't play defense for any faith. I just think it is a little off to single any one faith out for scrutiny based on the goofy meter reading. Heck the whole reason for my agnosticism is the organized reliance on these events as actual happenings.

That said, you have to take each person individually, and I try to avoid making judgments based on a person's religion. If I did, I'd be keeping my distance from everyone except atheists and agnostics. Since most atheists I know are detestably activist in one way or another, so I'd probably have to just move out to the woods and live deliberately or something. But I'm not judging...
