While my childhood was far less traumatic, I had many Conservative influences that helped to shape my thinking as an adult. Obama did too, with his allegiances to Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers. Your's were more home grown, apparently, with interaction with governmental social safety nets. That's OK, you play the hand dealt to you......

However, when issues become less of circumstance and more of behaviors and poor-decisions, many of us are far less empathic to the consequences. It is not that we don't care, it's that responsibility has to start somewhere other than the wallets of folks footing the bill.

Society doesn't owe your daughter anything. In Virginia prior to the 2010 elections, a young liberal Democrat threw rocks and broke an incumbent Democrats office windows near Charlottesville. WHen found out, the young liberal dismissed the act as "trying to raise awareness of the violence inherent in the Tea Party".
