"Four Big Sky Conference teams -- Portland State, Montana State, Montana and Weber State -- finished in the Top 20 in the FCS in rushing offense last season. That was almost half the league. Portland State averaged 247.8 yards last year, tops in the league. And though star Cory McCaffrey is gone, the Vikings will benefit from Maryland drop-down D.J. Adams, a 220-pound wrecking ball. Montana and Montana State, which finished second and third in the Big Sky in rushing in 2011, bring back virtually everyone in their backfields, from Cody Kirk, to Jordan Canada to Tray Robinson to Peter Nguyen to Orenzo Davis to Dan Moore.

Still, it's tough to project any of them higher than the league's top rusher from 2011, who is back to build on back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Northern Arizona's Zach Bauman finished last season with five consecutive 100-yard games, including one 200-yard outing, while nearly reaching the 1,500-yard plateau. Entering 2012, Bauman remains the best and brightest of all Big Sky Conference backs.

Ummm ....Cal Poly had the 7th best rushing offence in the country last year ahead of Portland State and averaged over 255 yards per game on the ground.


Wow... the frequency that media types are forgetting about Cal Poly is almsot staggering at this spoint. Yes, the Big Sky has in fact had some very talented run offenses as illustrated above. In addition, in Cal Poly they have added one of the most potent run offenses in the country over the past 10 or so years. This year's team will be anchored by San Diego State transfer and forrmer Big Sky freshman of the year (NAU) Deonte Williams...I suspect the clown who wrote this will remember his name by year's end.

I agree Cal Poly may be flying under the radar, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Nothing like being snubbed to light a fire under your squad. I can't wait to see how this season shakes out, definitely could be some HUGE surprises

Zach Bauman for sure looked great in camp but NAU now has a 1-2 punch with former Cal RB Covaughn DeBoskie. They are both beasts. NAU will have two 1,000 plus runners this season.

Nobody is arguing that Poly won't lead the conference in rushing. They run a spread option and rush the ball 80% of the time. But that doesn't necessary mean they have the best RBs. Just like ISU may lead the conference in passing because they pass the ball 70% of the time doesn't mean Yost is the best QB in the conference.

The Cats have two all-americans and the Newcomer of the year at RB. Because of this, I don't think any of them will be near the top of the league, BUT combined, I have a hard time thinking we won't be at the top of the conference, or nation.

Actaully SacCat said that and Catman just said they'd finish no better than 4th this year; the former may be true, the later is a stretch...I'd be very surpised if they did not finish in the top 3 and I think they very well could lead the conference. It really depends more on how they run the offense this year.

You make a very fair point....and to be clear I never said that Cal Poly had the best RBs in the conference. I was just saying that the author failed to even mention Cal Poly despite the fact that they finished ahead of every team in the BSC in team rusing offense....Also I do believe that Deonte Williams will finish in the top 10 this year.
