I'm limited in my knowledge of what's there since I'm 2.5 hrs away, but there are a few things I could mention (college towns tend to be pretty fluid with what is open/closed at any given time). It also depends on what you're into, family, kids, etc.

Dan'l Boone Inn - haven't eaten there in forever, but it's kind of an institution there. Generally a long line, but served family style and all the typical Southern fare (fried chicken, etc.). Half mile from the middle of downtown.http://www.danlbooneinn.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Makoto's - hibachi style Japanese, some of the best I've had. The wife and I try to go almost every Sunday we're up there. Out on Hwy 321, probably 2 miles from downtown

Peddler Steak House - a little higher end, but good salad bar, a guy brings a whole tenderloin to the table and you tell him where to cut it. Near Makoto's.

Black Cat Burrito - cool little dive downtown - good portion size, not very expensive

Mellow Mushroom - very casual hippie style pizza place (actually a chain in the Carolinas and elsewhere). Good pizza and calzones, good beer selection

Macado's - mostly sandwiches, but a ton of choices. Decent bar also, downtown.

Murphy's - haven't been there in years, but was good when I was in school.

Klondike - just off campus near the gym. Went there a handful of times, was kind of a frat joint when I was I school.

If you go into Blowing Rock there are several good spots also (8 miles from Boone):

Six Pence pub - downtown, British style pub. Good selection of beers, food is pretty good

Mellow Mushroom - see Boone above

Canyon's - good food, great view, decent little bar.

Woodland's - if you want good pulled pork BBQ this is the place.

I'd suggest posting this on AGS also since I think a lot more students and Boone residents could weigh in on some ideas.

Also no kids, five of us in Boone to have a good time and watch the Griz.

Anywhere, anytime...Go Griz!
there's a thread there of "things to do in Boone before you die" that has some good suggestions.
