Tax Returns
So it turns out, Harry Reid doesn't make his tax returns public either. In fact only 17 members of congress have agreed to a request from McClatchey News Service to release theirs including Reid and Nancy Pelosi.
The President and VP have followed precedent and released the last 12 years.
Why shouldn't everyone in congress and running for president do so? Sunlight...

Re: Tax Returns
Good to see this election cycle has a lot of discussion and soul-searching about the economy and our future and not which rich folks are paying the most taxes.
BTW, I'd bet money that Romney gives a higher percentage of his income to charities than Reid or Pelosi.

Romney could end the discussion if he released his records.

Re: Tax Returns
Regardless Reid has effectively cornered Romney & there is no good option for him. He's damned if he does most likely & he'll be damned if he doesn't because it just feeds into the perception that's already there.

If Romney had come clean with at least five years of returns, he could have warded this off by portraying himself as a smart business man who knows how to navigate the tax laws....now it comes down to two choices-
1. Stick to his guns and get creamed in the fall.
2. Come clean now and bow out in time for the GOP to nominate another candidate at the convention.

Re: Tax Returns
He's playing politics just like Obama. Romney did release 23 years of taxes to the McCain Presidential campaign. McCain released 2 years of his when he ran, Romney so far has released 2010 and an estimated 2011 according to Fact Checker. Obama released 7 years of returns when he first ran.dbackjon wrote:Kerry has 23 years of tax returns released.Gil Dobie wrote:

Re: Tax Returns
I'd say you're wrong there because if that was the case Romney would've probably released his returns already and the conversation could move elsewhere. The fact of the matter is it hasn't and Romney's stigma, earned or not as a job outsourcer & not paying an actual high percentage of income towards taxes will continue to dog him. The truth of the matter is Romney doesn't stand for much of anything specific other than he's not Obama & he'll keep the 1% fat & happy.Baldy wrote:Yeah, the discussion would end the second he released his returns.kalm wrote:

He's got to realize the election is winnable for him (not that I'd goto Vegas today & bet a dime on his candidacy), but he has to get out of the corner he's in & attack better. And he has to start getting more specific on his ideas - what he's thrown out there to date hasn't/isn't working on the general election level.
If he really can end the discussion with releasing returns then do it, otherwise the belief, whether it's true or hype, that there are tax skeletons in Mitt's closet will just grow & discredit his stance on the subject......

Re: Tax Returns
Romney released 2010 returns and will release 2011 returns, MORE than what the law requires.dbackjon wrote:Kerry has 23 years of tax returns released.Gil Dobie wrote:

Kerry released returns, but his sugar mama wife didn't and REFUSED to release any.
Jimmy Carter released one year of returns.
John McCain 2 years.
Ronald Reagan 1 year.
Don't quite understand. It was OK for McCain to release 2 years, but not Romney? Guess there wasn't enough red meat on that bone to satisfy the mouth breathers.
In the end, it isn't going to matter. Obama can't run off his record and this turd can only fly for so long.

Absofuckinglutely amazing that we (as a country) will elect a guy with close ties to KNOWN terrorists, but godforfuckingbid a man not pay his "fair share" of taxes by taking advantage of the tax laws. Re: Tax Returns
I don't understand how Reid can say that Romney didn't pay his taxes for 10 years. I can certainly understand if Romney's taking advantage of loopholes, but wouldn't the IRS have something to say if he's not paying?

Re: Tax Returns
I don't believe the case is that he did not pay taxes, the case is he did not have to pay federal income tax on his income because of ample write-offs and loop holes for those with his assets, attorneys, and tax accountants. Throw in the off shore holdings, etc and the reality is, nobody else will understand either, that is how you make millions and millions of dollars without paying any income tax, but that you still have no problem shelling out 10% to the Mormon Church so that they can pursue their agenda with their billions.∞∞∞ wrote:I don't understand how Reid can say that Romney didn't pay his taxes for 10 years. This has been leaked, and as far as anyone knows only McCain and staff had access to Romneys prior tax returns. Notice McCain chose Palin instead of Romney for his running mate, probably because she had much less baggage.
Romney was going to lose anyway, but it appears over much earlier than expected at this juncture.

Why does Romney have to release his returns to end the discussion? How about a fair trade: Reid reveals his "source" and Romney releases his tax returns?kalm wrote:Especially if you consider the Mormon Church a charity. Of course, Romney just encourages this type of discussion because he won't release his returns. Romney is an empty suit that stands for nothing, except the advancement of himself. However, if I'm Romney, I'd ask the IRS to validate Reid's claims because it's clear Reid isn't dignified enough to do it himself.

I think you're spot on. I also agree that Romney was going to lose anyways. Neither candidate is worth a damn, but the Republicans clearly pulled off what the Democrats did in 2004--put up an even worse candidate than the incumbent. But he does not do that. All he ever says is Obama bad, Romney good, Obama bad, Romney good, rinse, lather, and repeat....
Romney is a silver spooner.
The whole point of the tax return hiding is that they know his finances will piss off those who pay almost all the taxes in this country, what is left of the middle class. He does not connect, nor understand, and the more he tries the more alien he comes off as.
Fucker is toast.
