I read Julian in high school on a lark because, at the time, I was into Roman history. I remember a fair amount of religion bashing and a lot of homosexual imagery. If Vidal claimed to have been bisexual and bedded over 1000 partners, as the Times obit suggests, 999 must have been guys.

No. That's just his chick fil a opinion. What drives you to dismiss someone else's beliefs?

In this case it's the obvious fact that male dominated societies that assign women to secondary status are not limited to those dominated by monotheism. Or, more generally, there is the obvious fact that great atrocities have routinely been committed by societies that are not dominated by monotheism including some such that atheism was promoted by and even forced upon people by the State. Do I need to cite examples? Geeze I hope not.

Another thing is that statement about "loathing of women." I mean really. Assigning someone to second class status does not necessarily mean one loathes them. I don't know about Islam, but saying that Jewish and Christian culture have included "loathing of women" is pretty ridiculous. And don't come with "He's saying that in another sense." It's a ridiculous thing to say. If he wanted to say "repression of women" or something like that he should've used a word that means what he was talking about. There has been no general "loathing of women" in Christian and Jewish cultures. Individual cases of guys loathing women, yes. But it hasn't been a general characteristic of those cultures.

And you guys really know that even if you won't admit it for the purposes of this discussion.

BTW is you want a better hypothesis for why men have been dominant in most human cultures you should look at our biology. Males of our species are much larger, stronger, physically adept, and more aggressive than females are. That is consistent with a social structure in which males dominate. It is also consistent with a structure in which males attempt to control females in order to ensure the the offspring they bear are theirs. And if you take an atheistic point of view and just try to explain things in natural terms, it's reasonable to say that our nature in that regard is more likely to have resulted in the concept of single all powerful male deities instead of saying that the concept of single all powerful male deities led to male dominated culture.
