Southern U camp thread

Post by tampajag »

Sign-ins and physicals might not make for hard-hitting action, but on Wednesday, they’ll be a signal that it’s coming soon.

Football is back on The Bluff.

At 1 p.m., Southern football players will report to fall camp and officially start the countdown to the Sept. 1 season opener at New Mexico. It’ll be Stump Mitchell’s third camp since taking over as coach, and after seasons of 2-9 and 4-7, it’s safe to say it’s the most important preseason yet.

Pettaway, three others not returning to Jaguars

Wednesday’s check-in and physicals for fall training camp were a reunion for the Southern football team.

But a few members of the family were missing.

Coach Stump Mitchell said four players would not be rejoining the team: lineman Donald Glover, defensive back LaMarkius Pettaway and linebackers Justin Fletcher and Robert Sanchez.

Joseph, Douglas to battle for SU quarterback job

As Southern football players milled about in the lobby of the A.W. Mumford Field House, J.P. Douglas made the rounds, twirling a football in his hands and chatting with teammates he hadn’t seen in months.

If the Jaguars’ quarterback battle was settled based on who checked into fall training camp first, the job would be his.

Jaguars go through ‘hard’ conditioning

The time will come for donning equipment, smacking pads and running plays on the Southern University practice fields. Thursday afternoon, however, was not that time.

The players dressed in powder blue T-shirts and gold gym shorts would have surely preferred fall camp to simply running wind sprints. There’s little fun in lining up on one goal line, racing to the other and repeating the drill a dozen times.

Duo trying to ignite SU running attack

Smash and Dash. Thunder and Lightning. Double Trouble.

Any time a team has a running back tandem, it’s practically begging for a nickname.
So what about Southern’s duo of Sylvester Nzekwe, the elusive one, and Jerry Joseph, the straight-ahead pounder?

“We’re working on it,” Nzekwe said.

McCall: Jaguars know what's at stake

As Southern enters the 2012 football season, count this in its favor.

The Jaguars know exactly what they’re playing for.

In two seasons under coach Stump Mitchell, they’ve struggled on the field and improved off of it, leading to a fall training camp where they believe the foundation has been laid for a successful future.

Freshman RB leaves camp

During a water break in Friday’s practice, Southern defensive back Marquon Webster cracked a big smile, put his arm on strength and conditioning coach Corliss Fingers’ shoulder and asked, “When’s re-testing?”

Webster didn’t have to worry about taking the team’s conditioning test again, because he passed it the first time. But the 16 players who failed have been stuck working out with Fingers instead of participating in the Jaguars’ first two preseason practices.

Jaguars' WR Michael Berry blends size, 4.4 speed

When Southern lined up for a brief scrimmage on Friday, this was a frequent occurrence: Michael Berry sprinting past a defender, catching the ball over his shoulder in the middle of the field and cruising toward the end zone.

It borders on alarming to see someone as big as Berry (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) move as fast as he does, and that’s why he’ll be one of the most watched players in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season.

What about William Waddell 6-4 205 Javon Jordan 6-6 220 Bradley Coleman 6-5 210!?!?!? A lack of speed was the problem with JuMorris Stewart.Hope that 4.4 is legit!!!! Did he run track?!?!?!?

Weather gets best of team

On Sunday afternoon, the Southern defense lined up in the lobby of the A.W. Mumford Field House and barked out signals.

Their opponent? A row of rolling chairs.

The Jaguars were left with no other option after lightning cut practice short for the second straight day. SU moved its start time up half an hour in an effort to juke Mother Nature, but to no avail.

Area players out to make impact at SU

Local players were not a hallmark of Southern’s 2012 signing class.

Of the 15 signees, just three were from Louisiana, with two coming from the New Orleans area and one from Port Barre.

But that doesn’t mean newcomers from Baton Rouge won’t make an impact this season.

Berry's not a track guy, but there's legit 4.3 speed with Hawkins on the outside. Receiver is the bright spot on the offense.

Southern University football moving on without defensive lineman Donavain Mallet

Southern coach Stump Mitchell wasn’t going to wait forever on help at defensive tackle, no matter how badly the Jaguars needed some.

Mitchell announced Monday he would be “moving forward” without former University of Louisiana-Lafayette lineman Donavain Mallet, who reported to the team last week but had been absent from practice in recent days. Defensive back Jaleel Richardson, who appeared in one game — making one tackle — for the Jaguars as a freshman last season, will take the roster spot Mitchell had been holding for Mallet in hopes of getting some help on the defensive
line.

Defensive coordinator Dawson Odums likes to be one with Southern University’s defense

Southern defensive coordinator Dawson Odums paced the practice field Monday shouting instructions in a voice that always stands out above the smack of helmets and shoulder pads. But what distinguished Odums even more than the noise that came from his lips was the gray Southern sweatshirt he wore on his lineman-sized frame.

It was early August. In south Louisiana.

SU line looks to set tone

Wednesday will mark the first full-contact practice for Southern, but don’t tell that to the offensive line.

In helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, the big guys in the trenches have already done plenty of hitting.

“When you’re a lineman and you have on shoulder pads, that’s full contact,” left tackle Chris Browne said. “I don’t see a difference with putting on some pants.”

Southern University looks at backup running backs

he emergence of a reliable third running back behind Sylvester Nzekwe and Jerry Joseph is a priority for the Southern offense this fall.

Should Nzekwe or Joseph (or both) go down with an injury, the Jaguars want to know the ball will be in good hands.

On Tuesday, they got to see that exact situation unfold.

Top receivers Berry, Hawkins join RBs Nzekwe, Joseph

For the second day in a row, Southern was without key offensive players when it took the field for practice.

And on Wednesday, the first day of full pads, that list grew even longer.

After losing running backs Sylvester Nzekwe (ankle) and Jerry Joseph (knee), the Jaguars also had to do without top receivers Michael Berry (hamstring) and Charles Hawkins.

Coach Stump Mitchell said Hawkins’ absence was because of a dentist appointment, and he expects the three injured players back at various times in the next week.
