Exclusive: Interview With James Michael Holmes, Hispanic Tea Party Member Falsely Accused by ABC
Big Government ^ | July 20, 2012 | Joel B. Pollak
Breitbart News spoke to James Michael Holmes, the Tea Party member falsely identified this morning by ABC News' Brian Ross and George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America as the possible suspect in the mass shooting early this morning at a screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. He is a 52-year-old Hispanic conservative who joined the Tea Party after becoming disillusioned with the Republican party.
"It was freaky," said Holmes, describing his reaction when ABC News speculated that he was the culprit who entered a crowded theater and opened fire on dozens of innocent men, women, and children. He disconnected his telephone and says that he is worried about members of his family who might be contacted by the media.
ABC News has since corrected its initial report, but tried to share the blame with "social media" and "members of the public" at first:
An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. Several other local residents with similar names were also contacted via social media by members of the public who mistook them for the suspect.
Now the correction has been updated, with ABC News and Brian Ross taking full responsibility, and apologizing:
An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

Bronco FAIL, again - President Obama cancelled campaign appearances today.
President Obama paid tribute to the victims of today's Colorado shooting tragedy and asked for Americans to pray for the people of the Denver suburb where the shooting spree happened.
Obama's remarks came in Florida where he was scheduled to speak at a campaign event. But Obama spoke only briefly and centered his comments on the tragedy.

Mass shooting at Batman premiere in CO
Holmes was not wearing NVGs...he was wearing a gas mask which would have limited his sight...
He was wearing a vest and other protective gear, but someone hitting him with a bullet traveling about 2375 feet a second will startle him...hurt him...distract him...or STOP him...
He gave up without a fight outside. He's a bully, not willing to fight back...

Ok so I came here first because I expected the discussion to get political. Hardly any way to avoid it. But I didn't post anything because I wanted to see what the discussion in the Locker Room was like and whether that'd be a better place to post what I was thinking. So I go to the Locker Room and there's only one response in the thread I see and it's a link directing the reader back to here. So I'll go ahead and post what I think.
Of course I thought about the fact that this is going to inspire gun control debate as these things often do but that goes without saying. What I was really thinking about is that my initial impression without really digging into it is that there is an association between this kind of thing and fairly high intelligence. This guy may have dropped out of his Ph.D. program because he was having some academic problems but he was still an honors graduate in Neuroscience. And he graduated from a school in the UC system. My bet would be if you looked at his standardized test scores when he came out of high school they were very high. I'd bet in the top 1 percent for sure.
I just don't recall ever hearing about some person that one would think has a below average IQ doing this sort of thing. I wonder if there is something to that cliche about the thin line between genius and insanity.

Re: Mass shooting at Batman premiere in CO
My other thought is that we as a culture over-react to this sort of thing. I mean it grabs our attention more than objective analysis says it should. And I'm as "guilty" of that as others. That's why I'm here discussing it.
But, you know, according to the latest data available at the injury and mortality reports query at http://webappa.cdc.gov/cgi-bin/broker.exe" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; there were 16,799 homicides in the United States in 2009 (latest year available in the query). That's an average of about 46 per day.
There were 11,493 firearms related homicides. That's about 31 per day. Constant background. So why is it that an incident like this inspires such riveted national attention? Why DOES it suddenly make the gun control debate flare? Especially since a guy like this was capable of concocting a nerve gas or something if guns weren't available. Nerve gas would work great in a theatre. THIS guy, more than the "typical" person, could have found a way to kill a bunch of people. So why the focus on firearms? I'd think homicides by people less potentially capable of coming up with alternatives, such as those that happen day in and day out in their mundane way that never make national news, would be better intellectual ammunition for gun control advocates.
I realize it's different than most homicides in certain respects. But it really doesn't much impact the...here we go...risk picture. I guess it's just "sensational." And, like I said, I'm the same as others. No question it grabbed my attention.
