Am I left handed? No, I'm not. I come from a large, Catholic family, we are all close with 2nd and 3rd cousins (60+ people) there is only one left hander, my brother.

I agree. However if there was a 144 IQ score and above line there would be almost NO REPUBLICANS up there (period) including Newt and all the faux republican intellectuals who are actually about 110 IQ's maybe 120's
If I had to bet I'd bet that the majority of those with IQs of 144 and above in the United States vote democrat. But I don't think it's nearly as large a majority as you do. I'd guess something like 55% - 45%.

If you go by the education/IQ correlation you lean towards Democratic voting for the highest level. That's because, even though in general likelihood of voting Republican goes up as educational attainment level goes up, it switches at "post grad" so that the majority of those with post grad education typically vote democrat.

But if you go with the income/IQ correlation there's not contest. There, with very rare exception, there is a consistent correlation between higher income and greater likelihood of voting Republican all the way through.

The main thing I'm getting at is this: If you were to make a poll test that required some minimal understanding of how our government works, etc., in order to vote, a larger percentage of those who typically vote Democrat would be excluded than the percentage of those who typically vote Republican. It would be enough to dramatically swing the advantage to the favor of the Republicans.

Liberals who think the "stupidity" factor favors the Republicans are delusional. It favors the Democrats.

Damn! So far, my very small sampling has held up that most Kerr's are left handed. If your 60+ are all from the Kerr side, that really fucks up the stats.

Sorry

I just went through a list of all parents, kids, cousins and such from the Kerr side that I know for a fact are right handed and it's actually 73 people ( i forgot two families). I'm fortunate where my family has always been close with 2nd 3rd and even 4th cousins.

BTW I think a lot of what goes on with higher IQ people depends on interests. I suspect that if you look at people like engineers or medical doctors in private industry you might see relatively more people voting Republican. If you look at Ph.Ds working in academia and for government you'd see relatively more people voting Democrat.

I don't know those things to be the case but that's what I'd expect.

This is an interesting discussion.

Of course you're neglecting to mention the concept of self interest. There are many highly intelligent and successful people who vote their tax rates and/or amount of regulatory hassle that affects them personally without looking at the big or long term pictures. IE what's good for them personally may or may not be good for the country as a whole.

Yes I agree. I personally believe that the Democrats are bad for the country as a whole but I do not think that...either way...how "more intelligent" or "less intelligent" people vote tells us what is good for the country.

For instance: There is a well known correlation between IQ and success. Like it or not, if you were to give every "poor" person in the US an IQ test however "poor" is reasonably defined I think you'd end up with their IQ being substantially lower than average. And they would also probably tend to like Democrats because Democrats are perceived as more interested in the plight of the poor. They are more supportive of programs to support the poor.

On the other hand high income people may be more likely to see the Democrats as wanting to pillage them. So on and so forth.

Another thing is that Academia sees the government as benefactor. They depend an awful lot on government themselves.

I do think a lot of it is self-interest. All I'm saying is that it amuses me when people who tend towards supporting the Democratic Party suggest that the Republican Party is the one that benefits most from support among the most ignorant and least intelligent. And that's because I think that, whatever the reason may be, the opposite is the case. It's the Democratic Party that benefits most from support among those groups. And I don't think there's any reasonable question about that.

I just had to say, "No I'm not." That's what I was referring to when I said "depends on interests." I didn't put the word "self" in there but that's what I was talking about. An awful lot of people who have post grad degrees are in the education establishment or in government. They are basically "beholding" to government. Their self interests are served by voting for the Democratic Party. I personally think that explains a lot of the advantage the Democrats have among people with post grad education.

I'm guessing the majority of engineers working in the petrochemical industry ...post grad or not...vote Republican. Just a guess. By the way: I'm more impressed by a BS in Engineering than I am by Ph.Ds in many other disciplines. That's why I mention engineers so much. Somebody says "Engineer" to me and I'm thinking "High IQ." You just can't do it without being really, really smart.

Which, again, doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the "good of the country." Engineers are indeed an intelligent lot, but getting them to see the big picture is a different story altogether.

Case in point. One of my very best friends is a PE from Montana. One time he took me up to visit his family's lake cabin in NW Montana. It was an early summer evening about 7:00 and we were driving through a truly magnificent and fairly remote river valley. The valley bottom contained a gorgeous, meandering small river with deer grazing everywhere and trout leaving small rise forms in the water. The valley walls were heavily forested with the evening sun glinting off the tamaracks, firs, and pines that lead to the higher slopes where numerous small snow fields remained from the previous winter.

I looked over and commented in awe at the scenery and he said "huh"? "Oh, sorry , I've been checking out the recent road construction work and appreciating the various grades and shoulder margins for the last 20 miles" (or some other engineering terms that went completely over my head.

Did I mention he's extremely smart and a total conk?

Oh I agree with you. I do not think one proves that one position is better than another by noting that the majority of smart people are for it or that the majority of not so smart people are against it. Same with education. The fact that the majority of those at the highest defined educational attainment level usually votes Democrat in national elections, for instance, obviously doesn't make me think the Democratic Party is on the right track.

I just think that there is a tendency among liberals to think that the more "stupid" and/or "ignorant" people tend to vote Republican. I interpret them as implying that the Republicans benefit from "stupid" or "ignorant" people voting for them and if only everyone knew better they'd all vote Democrat. And I just don't think it's true. As I said, I think that the Democratic Party is the one that enjoys the most support among the least educated and informed however one reasonably defines that group.

Actually, your cited example doesn't work. Voting your tax rate or regulatory burden --the higher it goes -- correlates perfectly with the long term best interests of the country. :thumb:

And there's an established principle of DE corporate law (I always throw in an educational bonus, don't I?) that distills down to this: stockholders are perfectly welcome to vote selfishly in corporate elections.
