Big South TEs 2012

Post by bjtheflamesfan »

Time for the last of our looks at the offensive skill positions for the Big South

Charleston Southern

Mike DeTerlizzi No 2011 stats
Tyson Pryor No 2011 stats

This position is probably the toughest to get a good read on because of the divergent uses of the tight end. DeTerlizzi was used more as a blocker last year, expect that trend to continue this year. Would be good to see him get some catches though.

COastal Carolina

David Duran 5 rec 75 yds 0 TD
Jon MAsley 1 rec 1 yds 0 TD

Just like with my comment opening my thoughts of G-W receivers, its not often you have a guy with only 5 catches as your top guy, but David Duran, who was granted a sixth year by the NCAA, was the top TE in the Big South (and an All-American) in 2010, and after suffering a season ending injury in the 4th game of the year, Duran is back and hopefully healthy and looking to take his spot on the first team all-conference back in 2012

Gardner-Webb

Tremayne Schley 20 rec 244 yards 2 TD
Mike Estes 42 rec 602 Yds 7 TD (2012 Signee)

Estes comes in looking to make an impact as the Runnin Bulldogs do not list a TE on their 2012 roster, though Schley is on the College Football Performance Awards Watch List for the position. If one of the Bulldog fans could offer an update that would be helpful.

Liberty

Brandon Apon 5 rec 34 yards 2 TD
Peter Gagliardi 6 Rec 80 Yds 1 TD

The Flames lose one of their better TEs in Tommy Shaver, who finished as the Big South First Team TE. The remaining 4 TE on the roster combined for fewer receptions than Shaver had by himself. The new offense may see an uptick in TE production and also see one of Liberty's 2012 signees potentially work their way into the mix at the position.

Presbyterian

Joey GIlkey 16 Rec 161 Yards 3 TD
Andrew Osborne No 2011 Stats

Gilkey showed some very good flashes in 2011, finishing fourth on the team in receptions (16) and leading the team in TDs. With only two TEs on the roster, look for a lot of snaps for both Gilkey and Osborne this season

Stony Brook

Brett Arce 6 rec 99 yds 0 TD
David Shukri No 2011 stats

Arce proved do be a good option in the passing game averaging 16.5 yards on his 6 catches last year, but where he and teammate Shukri have proven most useful is in the running game, serving as extra blockers for Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski last year and for Marcus Coker (transfer from Iowa) this season.

VMI

Mario Thompson 11 rec 222 yds 1 TD
WIll Lucas 6 rec 57 yds 1 TD

The TE position has had to make the biggest adjustment for VMI as they have switched from their option based attack to a more pro style that they have used the past two seasons. Thompson showed himself a quick learner , as he quadrupled his number of receptions from 2010 to 2011 and saw his total yards increase tenfold. If Kordenbrock has another solid year, dont be surprised to see Thompson in the running for all conference come season's end

Rankings

1. CCU
2. SBU
3. PC
4. VMI
5. LU
6. CSU
7. GWU

Individual

1. David Duran, CCU
2. Brett Arce, SBU
3. Joey Gilkey, PC
4. Brandon Apon, LU
5. Mario Thompson, VMI
6. Mike DeTerlizzi, CSU
7. Jon Masley, CCU

I don't believe that Trey Schley is on the 2012 G-Dubb Team. I'm not certain of the circumstances of his departure but he is not listed on the roster and I heard that he wouldn't be back.

Not much room in Mills playbook for TE receptions.

Would you believe at the beginning of Spring practice, Will Lucas volunteered his services.........at Center? Yes, he'll be challenging for the starting center position come August. He's been hitting the weights and Mess Hall, might be up 20-lbs. to 265 by August 1. Thompson's back up (with #3 TE Conner Mays being moved to DE {for now}), is former Basketballer Wayne Whiting (6'7, 254), who needs the 9th semester to graduate, and he said: "what the heck!". Sparky said Whiting had a good Spring, considering he hasn't played FB since 7th grade.
1-AA is tops!!

Schley is not on the 2012 Gardner-Webb roster or the 2012 College Football Performance Awards Watch List.

Look out for Hudson Smith [R. Jr.] to play TE for Gardner-Webb.

He looks like he has bulked up quite a bit, what's his weight? I know he can catch it and run with it. Will he still be long snapping?

245 lbs and solid. He's been working hard on his conditioning. I do believe he will also be #1 LS.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

He also played some running back when yall were a little thin did he not?

It will be good to have someone with some experience (even if not at that position) to help a guy like Estes along that first year
