That's not true. The Quran is very tolerant of other religions, which is why many have survived under past Islamic empires. However, it's not tolerant of those who actively try to destroy Islam or convert Muslims. Of course, like in any other religion, the power-hungry (militants and Imams) pick and choose which verses to apply and "translate," and which to not, and the uneducated follow their lead. In reality though:
Verse 2:62 wrote:Those who believe and those who are Jews, Christians and Sabeans, and anyone who believes in God and the Last Day, and acts honorably will receive their earnings from their Lord; no fear will lie upon them nor need they feel saddened.
The sad thing about Islam today is that it's less tolerant than it has been in the past, and it's not because of the religion itself, but because of the people currently running it.

That does not negate the fact that GOD ORDERED THE DEATHS OF THOUSANDS! They are saved through Christ? How merciful. Slaughtered by the Dad, Saved by the Son. :thumb:

Btw, I'm not an athiest. I was raised Roman Catholic and was very religious until I started studying and learning about religions. I like to think of myself as Enlightened.

You said it yourself that through these translations there are distortions. Deflection? I just gave some more examples in my train of thought. I am a Christian but I do not believe all of the "Bibles" , esp OT stories that they happened word for word. Many books of the Bible were writtten down many years and in some cases centuries after they supposedly happened. Now could people telling these stories have exaggerated or somehow got the true story screwed up?....you bet.

Was there killing-murder-rape-slavery in "Biblical" times? Sure there probably was, that was humanity in our history at that time.

Another example is tatoos. Some people think that someone is going to hell if they mark their bodies with tatoos. I have 6 of them on my body and they all mean something special to me. Now am I going to hell.....some will quote Leviticus 19:28 to support their arguement. IMO, that verse has to be put into context about the Israelites and the pagan people around them and God wanting to set his people apart from them. But to some I am going to hell but to me when my time comes, I don't think God is going to judge me on my 6 tats that I have in reference to my love for my wife and daughters...but that is my opinion. Like I said, others will say I'm going to burn for it.

You said you were raised Roman Catholic. I know some RCs that believe all non-RCs are going to hell because they are not RC. Do I believe this. No. Who is right? I guess we'll find out someday if you believe.

Another example is the "Flood" and Noah. Supposedly God killed everyone on Earth ex. Noah and his family on the Ark. Now did this happen? Maybe. IMO, the Flood and this story in the Bible is one that was told from the fillilng up of the Black Sea when the Med Sea flowed into it. There is not enough water on the planet to completely submerge all the land mass ex for the tallest peaks. So I believe this is what was handed down and told as a story that was put into the Bible.

Do I believe everything in the Bible word-for-word? No I don't, but many do. I believe Jesus died for our sins and we reach salvation thru him. You want to classify that as a "cult"...that is fine. This is your opinion.

With all of the passages that you quoted...ya, it does look like God "endorsed" all of those things. I believe God is a forgiving God that blesses us with his Grace. People sin, people make mistakes, people can be bad, people are bad. He sent his own son to die for us. Jesus knew this and accepted his fate.

Now if I was a Muslim, I could demand that you convert to Islam or I have the "devine right" to kill you if you don't. I certainly believe this is appauling but there are 1.5 billion persons that when push comes to shove would follow this lock step and key. Countless people have been killed in the name of religion and in all sadness it will continue.

My generalization about your original post was probably alittle "in your face" but you have obviously taken time to read about this. If this offended you then I apologize for it but anti-Christian remarks or statements like this get my blood pressure going up. I'm not a Biblical scholar that can spit out memorized texts about any subject. But I have read the Bible completely thru and believe that he is a forgiving God that sent his son to die for our salvation. You don't believe this....that is ok.
I'm not offended, but there are a few things in this world that i know. Reading the bible is not the same as understanding the History behind the bible. My premise is that the Bible aka the word of God, sanctions crimes like murder, rape and slavery. Aside from that, it also makes no sense. For example God created light, then 4 days later he creates the Sun (the source of light). The Bible, IMO, is a story book with stories that describe how one should live, and what will happen if we step out of line. In early civilizations it was impossible to explain many things that we now understand d. Therefore, Gods will is the reason your son died. The Plagues were from God. no, actually the plagues of Egypt are naturally occurring side effects which still occur on a small scale.

Have a happy forth.

The sad thing about Islam today is that it's less tolerant than it has been in the past, and it's not because of the religion itself, but because of the people currently running it.

There are 109 verses that call for Muslims to war with infidels or non-believers for the sake of Islamic rule.

Here are a few:

Quran:

2: 191-193
2: 216
3: 151
4: 74
8: 12
8: 39
9:5
9:38-39
9:73

Ask the Copts in Egypt how tolerant it is, or the Christians in southern Sudan or the residents of East Timor or....on and on.

I had a Croatian friend in college say that Muslims are fine as long as they are not in the majority. He saw this first hand in Bosnia.

I wouldn't know how many but you find the same passages in the Bible.

I'll save you all the trouble of making bold, unproven, "transcendent" claims about the universe, most if not all of which are either factually incorrect or not-provable by let you in on something.

You're wrong.

An ancient species of aquatic dinosaur that somehow survived down through the ages, land locked in a Scottish lake is more believable that many of the stories taught in the bible. Just sayin'. :twocents:
Your wrong, it is completely more believable.
