A "Mind your Own Business" moment

It was February. The maximum temperature in Pleasanton, CA, On the day of the incident (February 8) was 65 degrees. The kids were not in significantly more danger than if she'd left them sleeping in their crib with the window unlocked at her house while she went outside to rake leaves or something. Yes it's possible someone might see them in the SUV, break the window and snatch them. But it's possible that the house could catch fire while she's outside raking leaves or someone could crawl through the unlocked window. Or numerous other possible but unlikely things.

We need a serious "Mind Your Own Business" readjustment in this country. We have an epidemic of people worrying about how OTHER people handle their kids. Worry about your own kids. Leave other people alone.

What really should happen is that someone should make the judge go to risk assessment classes. I wonder if he or she ever thought that maybe...just maybe...the woman was smart enough to realize that the kids were not in danger of suffering heat related damage when the weather was cool.

I get what you're saying but I don't know man, 11 weeks is pretty damn young and 40 minutes is a long time. If the sun was shining through the glass the kids could have gotten a sunburn in that amount of time. They could have started vomiting (which babies do quite often) and choked on their own vomit, or cried themselves into shock, or a pretty good fever.

On a side note, I can remember my parents leaving me in the car when I was 5ish and going into the bar for a drink.

I don't think they could've gotten a sunburn through auto glass in February. In any case, think about it this way: They could just as easily be exposed to sunlight passing through auto glass for 40 minutes or more if she's driving on a long trip predominately in one direction on a road trip.

The other stuff could happen to a kid if you leave them in their crib sleeping while you go outside to do yard work. That kind of thing is why I compared what she did to going outside to rake the leaves. Yes, there is some risk associated with not constantly supervising your infants. But nobody would suggest criminally charging someone for leaving their infant sleeping in its crib while they go outside to do yard work for a while.

If it was summer those kids would have been put at high risk by being left in the vehicle like that. But given that it was February on a day when the high temperature was 65 degrees, they weren't. Actually if someone took the time to do the math I'm confident they'd show that the two kids were at much higher risk of something bad happening to them when she was driving to get TO the parking spot they were sitting in when that busy-body saw them. And that's assuming she followed ALL of the busy-body safety rules to "keep them safe" on the way there.
