JFC, what has this country become?

Post by grizzaholic »

More nanny state BS regulations and rules while any form of thinking is absent.

It was raining when her children left for school on Tuesday, so Jesse Michener did not slather them in sunscreen, even though she knew they'd be outdoors for field day later that afternoon. But the sun came out around noon and, when the kids came home, two of them were so severely sunburned that they had to go to the hospital.

"We've never done a field day at the school before," Michener told Yahoo! Shine in an interview on Thursday. "They were outside for over five hours."

A freelance photographer, she posted pictures and described her daughter's sunburns on her blog. "Two of my three children experienced significant sunburns. Like, hurts-to-look-at burns," Michener wrote. "Violet is starting to blister on her face." Both Violet, 11, and her sister, Zoe, 9, "have headaches, chills and pain" and had to stay home from school the next day. (Her youngest daughter, 7-year-old Eleanor, was also sunburned, but not badly.) The girls did not stay overnight at the hospital, and Michener said they are being treated at home with cool baths and over-the-counter pain medications.

This is the best line.

"Tacoma Public School district spokesman Dan Voelpel told Yahoo! Shine that the school district's sunscreen policy -- which forbids teachers from applying sunscreen to students, and only allows students to apply it to their own bodies if they have a doctor's note authorizing it -- is based on a statewide law. "

so there you have it. The nanny state laws (already on the books) actually got in the WAY of common sense.

Never heard of going to the hospital for sunburn. I'm sure we've all had a severe case of it, but ya just suck it up.

edit: kids need a doctor's note to apply sunscreen? What. The. ****?

FWIW, I've "applied" "sun screen" to D1B's head & neck region, and portions of his back on several occasions... :coffee:

I think the question of what this country is coming to is valid but I'll also say that the unfortunate mother suffers from a misconception if she thinks that clouds and rain will prevent sunburn; particularly for fair-skinned people. The ultraviolet radiation penetrates the clouds. Reduces it to some extent and cloud thickness matters. But it gets through enough to burn the hell out of you.

One of the worst sunburns of my life was suffered because I had the same misconception. It was a very cloudy day and I spent many hours outside without worrying about sunscreen as a result. And I got completely toasted. Later I looked it up and found out that clouds do not do a real good job of stopping ultraviolet.

Basically, if she'd known, she'd have sunscreened her fair skinned kids if they were going to spend a day outdoors whether it was cloudy/raining or not. Of course in this case it was worse because the sun came out and the UV radiation was even more unimpeded. But they'd have probably gotten sunburned anyway if they'd spent that much time outside during the "high UV" part of the day with no sunscreen.

Is it that this type of shit is news?

Why the fuck should I care if that little kid is sunburned or not? :wall:

Those of us of European heritage are a little more susceptible to it, and it is possible to get burned badly enough so as to requires medical attention. :coffee:

Wow, you mean 5 hours? In a row? Outside? Somebody call social services, these kids are being mistreated....somebody needs to get sued over this. :ohno:

Maybe if your fat kid spent a little less time on facebook or in the basement playing video games and actually learning how to play sports outside the virtual world they might get a couple of scars and, God forbid, some tolerance to the sun. :twocents:

Agreed on getting them outside, but 1 in 100 people will now get Melanoma and it doesn't have to be direct exposure to the area and it doesn't matter if your dark complected or fair skinned.

I remember thinking how dumb this law was when my boys were in pre-school. Lawsuits and accusations of molestation are why it's in affect. Too bad society is like this. :ohno:

Fine that the teachers are not allowed to put the sunscreen on, but let the damn kid put it on. Society is regressing.

This will be sooner than later.

I think the kids can put it on but they have to bring it with them.

You know, as much as I do, that kids lose stuff. If a kid asks to have some sunscreen, let the kid have some. It isn't a difficult decision. IMO.

I had better be careful from now on when I watch a friends son and daughter when they are having a date night. When we go to the river or the park I had better have all of my permission slips in order and be sure not to give any out to anyone else....

First, when the "sun screen" was "applied", it was done so about 20 yards from the "M" on Mt. Sentinel, (outside).
And second, tapioca ain't sun screen either, but what I put on D1B sure looked like it!! :coffee:

I'm going to link a page that shows a comparison I first saw in either Science News or Discover when I had subscriptions to those magazines during the 1990s:

http://afrenchtouchsalon.wordpress.com/ ... revention/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm talking about the comparison between what the 95 year old monk who spent most of his life out of the sun looks like as compared to 66 year old Native American woman who spent a lot of time in the sun.

Yes, you are more vulnerable if you are fair skinned. But anybody...ANYBODY...is better off avoiding over exposure to solar radiation. Ok. I'll admit that the evidence is observational. But it's VERY consistent and backed up by reasonable assessment of what ultraviolet radiation does. You can be the Blackest Black on the planet and have kids that take after you but if your kids spend 5 hours during the peak radiation hours out in the sun it's going to be breaking down the collagen in their skin.

If it was in the policy for the school then the parent should have been aware of it and AWARE of the concept of "field day". Just tells me how much of a neglectful parent she is...more worried about writing on her blog than paying attention to her children. Send them to school with a $3 tube of sunscreen, problem solved. The school is protecting itself from being accused of "inappropriately touching a student" not to mention that some kids are allergic to certain types of sunscreen.

Some of the comments I've been reading about this amaze me. On one hand you want schools to NOT "raise your children for you", and yet on the other you want the schools to take responsibility for children when their PARENTS are negligent. Which one is it?

BTW Fox News brought this story up today...which is why I'm breathing life into this dead thread :ugeek:
