Sick While on Vacation? Just take more time off!
Now I'm not against good, quality time off policies (I think 2 weeks vacation is too short for a year - 3 weeks is ideal and we should aim for that - not sure I want the government mandating it though) but in another sign of why Europe may never get itself out of the hole they have dug for themselves, now not only are workers guaranteed at least 4 weeks of paid vacation per year, if they happen to get sick while taking any of their vacation they can, in essence, take those days off again. I mean, you can't be on vacation and sick and not be compensated for it, right?

The only thing I miss about working for the State of Maryland is the leave time. Man you get a lot of time off. Vacation, sick, personal. Now I just get leave hours. A 96 hours lump on my anniversary date and 4.5 hours with every paycheck(twice a month)
Wow, I just did the math. 25.5 days off a year. Not bad!

At my last company I got 4 weeks of PTO (paid time off) that you used for sick days or whatever. I'm rarely sick so it was all vacation for me. Technically I only have 2 weeks of vacation now, but I take a little more than three most years - my boss only gets three weeks officially although he takes more. Sick days don't count, you just can't abuse them.

I get 2 weeks official vacation now, plus we get 11 holidays (8 fixed, 3 floaters), plus another 40 hours of PTO time (sick leave/doctor leave/whatever) so that's basically 3 weeks and 3 days there before counting holidays. Not too shabby. And I get the extra week next year as well so that'll be 4 weeks off. Like I said, I don't know how people hold a job and also take more vacation than that - 4 weeks is a lot. And that doesn't even include adding days back on in case I was sick during my vacation and didn't get to truly enjoy it!

So if my match is right out of 260 workdays next yr, you'll only have to work 229. Thats 136 days off. Awesome, esp if you don't have to work weekends.GannonFan wrote:I get 2 weeks official vacation now, plus we get 11 holidays (8 fixed, 3 floaters), plus another 40 hours of PTO time (sick leave/doctor leave/whatever) so that's basically 3 weeks and 3 days there before counting holidays. I get 15 days per year......
Well, 10 but I can roll 5 days over from the previous year - oh and the place I work is open 62 days a year - only days closed is Easter day, Christmas day, and Thanksgiving day.
I work on average 23 days a month.

I get leave time only (to cover sick, vacation and personal). I get 5 weeks a year. Any unused time gets rolled over. Under normal times, once you accumulated 200 hours, you got paid out for at least 80 hours. I now have over 500 hours accumulated, but this economy has left my company in no position to pay me out yet. Yes, I hold leave time very sacred and only use it if I absolutely have to.
Re: Sick While on Vacation? Just take more time off!
Five weeks would be great, but there's a point where a company realizes that if they can fill in and get by without you for 5 weeks a year, maybe they don't need you at all.......not great for morale, but if you're in a tough business environment I could see companies scrutinizing the amount of vacation time you take. You've earned it, but I guess it could be a double edged sword.CAA Flagship wrote:I get leave time only (to cover sick, vacation and personal). I get 5 weeks a year. Any unused time gets rolled over. Re: Sick While on Vacation? Just take more time off!
I'm on the short end of the stick. I was laid off in December 2010 and started working again in October 2011. I went from having 20 vacation days plus 10 sick days per year to having 6 vacation days and 7 sick days per year. After my 1 year anniversary, I get bumped up to 10 vacation days per year. I have less time off available now than I did when I graduated 24 years ago. It's not the best but it beats unemployment.
I would normally negotiate for more vacation time but I wasn't in a position of strength this time and had to take what I could get. I do wish that more companies would give experienced people some sort of percentage credit for their years of experience when determining vacation time.

Why do y'all care so much about how how many hours of vacation time people halfway around the world get?

It was an interesting news story. Is there something wrong with obtaining news about events from around the world? I mean, there is more news than the local news at 6PM and 11PM.Skjellyfetti wrote:Why do y'all care so much about how how many hours of vacation time people halfway around the world get?
