Why there was a grain of truth to that miliary "hero" thing

Post by JohnStOnge »

We all remember the hub bub when an MSNBC commentator expressed some concern over using the term "hero" to describe military members (http://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2012/ ... n-for-mil/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I think I see a grain of truth in what he said.

I think it's expressed by the old Emerson Lake and Palmer song "Lucky Man." Tell them they're "heros." Tell them there's glory. Send them into the grinder.

He had white horses
And ladies by the score
All dressed in satin
And waiting by the door

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

White lace and feathers
They made up his bed
A gold covered mattress
On which he was laid

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

He went to fight wars
For his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory
The people would sing

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Patriotism is a tool designed to get people excited about dieing for you...

When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of or that he doesn't understand, he always declares that it is his duty. (George Bernard Shaw)

Republicans teach: Do not trust your government
Except when they ask you to go die in the sand somewhere

Q: Name something that offends Republicans?
A: The actual teachings of Jesus

That's kinda the point Chris Hayes was making in this. So good points. I know you don't have a t.v. so you are for forgiven for redundancy.

He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."
