If 70% of New Yorkers agreed with this, they wouldn't BUY large sodas & ventis and the stores would stop SELLING them.

But I think you got answer by accident with your first sentence. :coffee:
Well, I asked for a link to back up the claim that 70% of NYC supports this and got no answer. Me thinks the 70% claim is BS.

Who cares? I rarely drink soda, and certainly never anything larger than 12 oz.

I have to admit I also like seeing the number of calories posted in take-out restaurants, as required by NY law. Mind-boggling how many calories some seemingly innocuous take-out has. Definitely helps you eat healthier.

Nonetheless, I thought this was funny:

Sorry missed that question. I read it in the WSJ actually last week at some point. I'm old fashioned and like a real paper so I don't have a link. Did a quick search but couldn't find the article in the online edition.

Take the poll out of it if you don't believe me.

Why do you care what NYC does?
Because I'll be there in a month and I want a fucking large venti, bitch. :tothehand:

NJ: Buckle up Your Dog & Cat or Face Fines
Jun 4, 2012
By Todd Starnes

Garden State drivers who fail to buckle up their cat or dog could face criminal charges as well as fines totaling up to $1,000, according to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

“You should not be driving down the road under any circumstances with a dog driving the car,” said Elyse Coffey, a spokesperson for the New Jersey MVC. “We don’t want dogs driving with the steering wheel and we don’t want cats who sit on the dashboard.”

State officials are teaming up with the NJ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to enforce laws requiring motorists to “properly restrain their pets.”

The law forbids dogs from hanging out windows – and also from riding in the bed of a pickup truck.
Drivers who fail to do so could face fines from $250 to $1,000 – for each offense. They could also be charged with disorderly conduct under New Jersey’s animal cruelty statutes.

“As your family gets ready to embark on their family vacation, you take the time to buckle up your kids because you love
them,” Coffey told Fox News Radio. “It’s also time to take a look at your furry family members.”

She said driving with a distracted animal in the car could be dangerous not only for the family pet, but also for other motorists.

An update on polling numbers in NYC on this issue.....

A majority of city adults oppose Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal to ban the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages in cups that exceed 16 ounces, saying it's an example of government "going too far," a poll released Monday night showed.

According to the NY1-Marist poll, 53% of New Yorkers believe the proposal is a bad idea; 42% say it's a good idea; and 6% are unsure. Manhattan was the only borough in which those in favor of the proposal, 52%, outweighed those opposed to it, 44%.
Clearly lower than the 70% I read last week. I have no problem posting it either.

My question still stands for those of you who don't live or work in NYC.....why do you care?

Well I don't care. But I would think if it happens in NYC, then it'll be coming to a town near you in the future?

Well I don't care. But I would think if it happens in NYC, then it'll be coming to a town near you in the future?
Perhaps. The other health-related initiatives that NYC has pushed recently have become federal law as well (e.g., calorie count on all menus, no smoking in public parks, etc...)

If this law can, make it there. This law can, make it anywhere.

Because I hate seeing a law like this possibly pass even though a majority of people are against it. I know our system is set up to protect the minority opinion, but this law doesn't just affect/help/protect the people in the minority.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread, but in somewhat related news, I heard on the radio that New Jersey is about to pass legislation that animals in cars must be harnessed. Do dogs allowed in backs of pick-ups.

WTF?

That, and it's a colossal waste of time.

I do see those laws as a bit different

Calorie count - allows people to make informed decisions.

No smoking in parks - smoke affects the people around the smoker negatively. Someone drinking a big gulp, not so much

Isn't that the purpose of a representative democracy?

Also - just a note - this hasn't passed yet. It does need to go through City Counsel.

I think in this case it's not. Preventing majority rule is to protect the minority that would be otherwise hurt. Can you really say this bill would protect the minority of people who are against it? Could be those in the majority that need the most protecting.
