NYC: the ultimate nanny state
"NYC plans to ban sales of sugary drinks over 16 ounces
The sin-tax sheriff is back on the job.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing another ban on unhealthy foods. This time, he wants to outlaw super-sized sodas and other sugary drinks.
The first-in-the-nation ban, formally announced Thursday, would limit sweet drinks to 16 ounces at venues across the city ranging from restaurants to street carts to movie theaters -- that means those extra-large cup holders at Loews are about to get awfully lonely.
The ban, though, doesn't seem to take into account the obvious work-around. Want more than 16 ounces? Just buy two bottles. There's no Big Apple ban on doing that -- yet.
Bloomberg's proposal hasn't quite joined the city's growing roster of other behavior-curbing laws like its bans on trans-fats and smoking. The Board of Health still needs to sign off on it, but according to MyFoxNY.com that's likely to happen since the members are Bloomberg appointees. ......"

Has idiot Bloomberg never heard of free refills? Not to mention the fact that the evidence of soft drinks contributing to obesity is very tenuous? All this will do is waste more disposable cups as you won't have couples buying large drinks to share. WAFJ.

Re: NYC: the ultimate nanny state
Would ban sweetened drinks over 16 ounces that contain more than 25 calories per 8 ounces. It wouldn't affect diet soda, any drink that's at least 70 per cent juice, or one that is at least half milk or milk substitute. Nor would it apply to drinks sold in many supermarkets or convenience stores. Businesses would face fines of $200 per failed inspection. How many hundreds of drink gestapo is NYC going to have to hire to carry out Bloomberg's edict?
-No more non diet sodas or sports drinks (gatorade) at restaurants in cups that hold over 16 oz. So let me see, after ice you'll get about 8-10 oz.
-No more large ventis from Starbucks.
-No more iced coffee over 16 oz.
-No more slurpee type drinks over 16 oz.
-No more non diet sodas at sporting events over 16 oz.
Etc, etc, etc
What's next Bloomberg? Limiting portion sizes on foods you deem fatty?

NYC spends billions a year on healthcare for its residents. There is empirical evidence that obesity and diabetes contribute a huge amount to this cost.
This is an economic decision that about 70% of NY'ers agree with.
I don't see the issue here.

Re: NYC: the ultimate nanny state
Not questioning the legality here, just the motivation. No other soda-related mass interventions like taxes and removing drinks from schools have proved to be effective at reducing obesity, so there's no reason to suspect this one will. You will just see more movie theaters, restaurants, and sports arenas offer more refills, or people will just switch to other sugary drinks like Hi-C or Hawaiian punch.danefan wrote:NYC spends billions a year on healthcare for its residents. Sodas are being singled out here for the same reason McDonalds is singled out for San Francisco's toy ban: it gives ignorant people a warm and fuzzy feeling of feeling like they're doing something good for public health and sticking it to those eeeeeevil corporations.

Honest question.

Outside of NYC, NY is far from deep blue. And NYC seats will always be represented by liberals. Call them Dems or republicans....they'll still be liberalBaldy wrote:Exactly. So why don't the people just limit themselves instead of having the city force them to have a small soda?danefan wrote:NYC spends billions a year on healthcare for its residents. There is empirical evidence that obesity and diabetes contribute a huge amount to this cost.

Re: NYC: the ultimate nanny state
No, there hasn't. But there really isn't any sound science or evidence that shows this would be effective even if the premise of soft drinks being a major factor in weight gain was correct. This is really just part of the emotional, unscientific backlash against corn sugar aka the diet bugaboo du jour. Never mind the fact that the American Medical Association and American Diabetes Association have reviewed the literature and have found there's no real evidence corn sugar causes more weight gain than cane sugar. Never mind that even the notoriously pro-food regulation Center for Science in the Public Interest also admits it too. Never mind the huge food portions that restaurants also serve. We must go after the evil soda.danefan wrote:Has there ever been a sale limit on sugary drinks before as broad as this one?

NYC is no longer part of the USA, they are very, very special and sensitive.
I don't know why those outside of this place give a hoot what they do, they lost me when they all started acting like girly boys over planes in the air.

Sorry missed that question. I read it in the WSJ actually last week at some point. I'm old fashioned and like a real paper so I don't have a link.
