Year: Junior

2011: Listed as a starter at left defensive end on preseason depth chart.

2010: He played in 13 games, including eight as a starter, as a redshirt freshman. The first start of his career came against Weber State (10/2/10) and he started the final six games of the year, including all four games in the NCAA Championship Subdivision Playoffs. He came up with one of the biggest plays in the playoffs with a forced fumbled that led to a 15-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Tyler Washburn in the semifinals against Villanova (12/17/10). His big play helped EWU take a 34-24 lead with 13:56 left in the game before winning by a 41-31 margin. He also had a season-high six tackles in the quarterfinals against North Dakota State (12/11/10). Both of his sacks also came in the playoffs, as he registered a sack in the first round against Southeast Missouri State (12/4/10) and was credited with a half-sack against both Villanova and Delaware (1/7/11). He finished with a pair of tackles as EWU came from behind to defeat Delaware 20-19 and win the NCAA Division I title. He helped the Eagle defense rank first nationally in interceptions (total of 26) and turnovers gained (47), and finish sixth nationally in red zone defense, as it allowed just 38 scores in 58 opponent trips inside the Eagle 20-yard line.

2009: Redshirted.

Named by the Seattle Times as a “Red Chip” selection as one of the top 22 prospects in the state of Washington. In addition, he was a member of Ron Siegel’s 31-member preseason All-State squad. A first-team All-Northwest Conference selection as a defensive lineman, he helped Lynden win the State 2A title with a 35-34 victory over Prosser. In the title game, Gaylord rushed for 76 yards and scored twice as the Lions rallied from a 15-point deficit to win their 10th-straight game after a 2-2 start. For his efforts, he was selected as the WIAA/SeattleTimes 2A Athlete of the Week. In a 21-12 victory in the semifinals over previously undefeated Archbishop Murphy, he caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and threw for an 80-yard score on the game’s first play.
