JMU Spring Football Practice

Post by Purple Reign »

Practice # 1 : Quintin Hunter looks to be fully recovered from his achilles injury.i was told that Quintin is not a starter now , but may be by the fall. Amir Waller continues to impress me. Dae`Quan Scott was practicing but wearing a red jersey.Marquis Woodyard has been moved to WR. Sean O`Neil spent most of practice by jogging.
Practice # 2 : I thought that Justin Thorpe looked a lot sharper than the first practice. The play of the day, Arlandis Harvey with a great post fake on Jakarie Jackson and run to the flag.Justin with a 45 yard toss for a td.Earl Watford limped off the field about half way through practice. They put ice on his left foot and he did not return.
Practice # 3 : Earl Watford was wearing a boot and has turf toe.Probably not practicing any more this spring. Stephin Robertson and Leavander Jones are not practicing .Adrian Cavanaugh and Jamie Veney are wearing red jerseys. Sean O`Neil was more involved in this practice.I thought that Justin Thorpe made some great reads today. He is throwing the ball better each practice. :D

Practice #4 : Earl Watford is back at practice. He looked very good with no ill effects of turf toe.I really like our O LINE. Our linebacker depth may be a problem.Ascene Jaquces and Stallings may have to step up if Jamie Veney is not healthy.Ryan Smith had a great practice. The play of the day, a pick six by Peter Rose. I can`t wait for practice #5 !!!

DNR article on Thorpe possibly getting 6th yr.

Article stated Thorpe took a redshirt his true fr yr in 08' mainly because of injury- he had surgery to repair his labrum on his non throwing shoulder after his senior yr at Varina HS, and he suffered season ending injury in 10' opener vs Morehead State, so has missed 2 seasons due to injury.

Thorpe: “I have a rock-solid case and I feel like I could get a sixth year, and it would really help. I don’t see how they could turn it down. I missed two years due to injury, and that’s what the guideline says.”

Mickey: “A lot of people think you get a sixth year when you miss a lot of games when you’re hurt a lot in your career, and that’s not correct. You get a sixth year if … the year you redshirt, if you’re injured that year. The NCAA always looks favorably on that. Justin came in and had shoulder surgery the year he was redshirting his true freshman year, so I would think he would stand a good chance.”

Jennifer Phillips, JMU’s assistant AD for compliance: "..........cases like Thorpe’s — where an athlete misses two seasons — have a “pretty high chance” of going through. But, she added, it’s on a case-by-case basis. She said most cases are decided within a month to six weeks.

That means Thorpe should know by the end of April......"

Article mentioned that Thorpe, who has played in only 20 games, is really only a Jr in terms of experience.

This would be huge for JMU to have him for another 2 seasons. Thorpe's 1st 3 starts as a rFr in 09', starting the 6th game of the season: vs defending NC, quarterfinalist #1 UR; eventual NC Nova; and @ semifinalist W&M, all losses, were pretty much disasters. Since then vs I-AA as a starter he has been 10-1, 7-0 vs CAA, with the only loss @ NDSU in the playoffs.

All depends on how they (the NCAA) views that freshman year and whether he legitimately could've played in spite of the injury. Players have been turned down for the 6th year even if they had just nagging injury issues in one of the injury years - you have to be clearly unable to play due to injury to get it. That said, the NCAA hasn't been terribly consistent in that regard either so what looks like a slam dunk case for a 6th year gets turned down and a more questionable one ends up getting it. Paperwork on JMU's end during that year will have a big piece to play in this too.

Kind of also depends on exactly when he had the surgery - was it after the football season or after his graduation. Recovery time for a labrum is like 8-12 weeks with surgery. Sure there are variations to that but 3 months, especially one that happens well before the actual season, doesn't mean you lose a season to injury. You don't get a 6th year redshirt because you miss summer workouts in one of those years.

Keenum tore his ACL in the 3rd game of the year that year, thus giving him the kind of injury that makes getting the 6th year more easy.

Today's spring game was all about the defense and a couple of newcomers, at least for me it was. TB Hakeem Brodie looked really impressive and walk-on QB Michael LoPresti looked very sharp. With that said, Thorpe looked really good throwing the ball as well.

JMU is going to be good in '12. Pretty good team was in the FargoDome last year for the playoffs.

Thanks for the compliments on the JMU football team, Bison Fan. NDST has a great team and very deserving of their championship season ! I hope we get to play you guys again in the playoffs in 2012, but this time at Bridgeforth stadium. I also thought your fans support was awesome in the Fargo Dome.

Yes , the defense played really well , as usual. Hakeem Brodie played well too. He is a load to tackle.I went to 12 of the spring practices and I think the play calling in the spring game was really conservative, compared to some of the other scrimmages that I saw this spring. We had a lot of key people not in uniform. I think that may have had a lot to do with that. Justin Thorpe looks to have improved on his ability to read the defense on pass plays , instead of just taking off and running with the ball. As far as LoPresti , I think those are wasted repititions. He has absolutly NO chance of playing. The athletic type of player that Mickey recruits ( lots of them were high school QB`s) one of them should have been getting those reps at QB. Such as Peter Rose or Andre Coble. If we can get everyone back healthy by the fall , we should have a very good team. I can`t wait !!!!

Well, it looks like Thorpe is definitely getting his 6th yr. This is what were looking at as of a couple of days ago:
2012: 5th yr Thorpe Thorpe, rSo Jace Edawards, 3 true Fr
2013: 6th yr Thorpe, rJr Edwards, 2-3 rFr QB
2014: rSr Edwards, 1-2 rSo QB (my prediction is 1 of this season's true Fr QBs gets moved to another position by 2014 and maybe 1 will no longer be with team).

Well, I guess Edwards figured his prospects of ever starting again were Thorpe getting injured and/or in 2014 beating out 1-2 of this seasons 3 QB signees, so Edwards has decided to transfer. That means both last yr's 2nd and 3rd string QBs (Billy Cosh, the rFr 3 star transfer from Kansas State who was a bust) have transferred. So Andre Coble will likely get moved back to QB from WR (last season as a true Fr he was moved from QB to WR and saw significant pt) to be Thorpe's backup. If Thorpe goes down don't want a true Fr as starting QB.

Worked out fine for ODU. But, get ready for it. The latest coming out of Harrisonburg is that a true freshman has more than a chance of being the backup. I would expect Coble to remain at WR.

Unfortunately you might be right. According to a Stoss tweet & JMU Rivals article, "Jeff Durden's perspective on JMU's backup quarterback situation. The preference right now? A true freshman."

GD It- that means JMU is one serious Thorpe injury away from an NC contending team to the season going down the tubes. So looks like the #2 will be whichever of the 3 true Fr looks the best:
Taylor Reynolds: 6'1", 185. MM compared to Landers as a Fr. Probably the most touted of the 3, and a dual threat QB who will likely be most suited of the 3 to run JMU's offense.
Ian Fisher- 6'6", 245, in the mold of VT's Logan Thomas. The most touted on the JMU page of the CAAZone, but pro style QB, not in the mold to run JMU's offense.
Michael Birdsong, 6'4", 215- MM called the best HS QB in the state of VA last season. Granted, in VA was a weak yr for HS QBs- not a single I-A signee. Again, another pro style QB.

If its just mop up duty, think JMU might just use Coble so as to not have to burn a redshirt of a true Fr.

Heinike was a rarity. If you have to go with a true Fr QB, you usually are screwed.

Completely agree. I hope we are enough ahead to where Coble can just be thrown in. But, if you are already thinking of using a true freshman, and there is no guarantee of Thorpe getting a 6th year, you might as well throw the true freshman in, if needed, to get them the experience.

Very true. I'm actually curious how he will do this year considering he will no longer be underestimated by defenses. It will be fun to watch.

Maybe the answer is to have Quintin Hunter as the back up or emergency QB. Quintin was a four star Rivals prospect. He started as a wide receiver at UVA as a true freshmen. He was listed as the Country`s # 22 athlete by Rivals and #81 by ESPN. What will be interesting is to see if MM will let one of the three incoming freshmen QB`s to get some game experience, not knowing if Justin Thorpe will get his sixth year. I just think that someone with real game experience needs to be ready if needed. With Jace Edwards leaving, it sure makes the reps that LoPresti got in practice look silly. He has no chance of helping the team. Go Dukes !

Granted Quintin Hunter had the accolades coming in 10', started some games, but he wasn't a world beater. In all fairness, he was so hyped coming in that anything short of making All CAA was going to be considered a letdown.

After missing last season due to the spring ball last yr achilles tear, hopefully he will be back to 100% and starting.

Well BDK, what would you suggest doing about the backup QB problem?
