SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

EPL was on three different channels here, I was flipping between Man U and Man City for the last five minutes of their games. That was about as dramatic as sports can get.

Good, now Fergie knows what it's like to have a title stolen from him on two stoppage-time goals.

You wouldn't need "injury" time if your players didn't continually fake injuries....or the clock stopped on dead balls and stops in play....

Well, the sport that brought us all here has about 11 minutes of actual playing time in a 60 game...

I'd rather watch 11 minutes of men playing like men with big hits and somewhat frequent scoring than an hour and a half or two hours of men playing like sissy girls, and faking injuries while running back and forth with very little scoring. :coffee:

People that argue any sport is boring just don't understand enough about it.

My girlfriend thinks football is boring. It's because she doesn't know what the fuck is going on, much less any of the strategy involved.

Lots of people in my generation find baseball to be boring. It's because they don't understand the sport enough to appreciate it.

89Hen watches golf. I find it incredibly boring... and it's probably because I don't understand the sport enough to appreciate it.

Baloney. First, I only "watch" the Masters, US Open and Open. I put golf on TV the other days to veg out or take a nap.

I understand soccer fine, I just have too many problems with it. I watch the WC and that's it. Too many unsportsmanlike moments for my liking. The only sportmanly thing is when one team gives the ball back to the other on a real injury. :coffee:

Well, that's at least part of the problem. Outside of all the fanfare and prestige, WC soccer tends to be slower paced and less free-flowing than leagues like the EPL or German Bundesliga. But in the end, I think it mostly comes down to different strokes for different folks. :twocents:

Agreed. I understand baseball, I just don't like to watch it. It's too slow moving and I like sports with some pace and that require athletic ability and endurance. And before someone gets all huffy about baseball players being great athletes, I will admit that it requires great skill to throw and hit a hanging curve but I won't call them athletes any more than I would call Minnesota Fats an athlete (and John Kruk and David Wells were closer to Minnesota Fats than they were to Michael Jordan).

I can't stand flopping in soccer but it's part of the game as it now stands, kind of like basketball players taking 3-4 steps on their way to the basket and football players strutting around like roosters after a play.

My issues with soccer:
1. Eliminate the offsides penalty.
Really? A moving line that the referee is not always in position to see accurately? Either make it a hard line (like hockey) or eliminate it. Let them cherry pick. The defense will adjust. Hate seeing bad calls on something that is extremely difficult to get right. I can't think of another sport where a referee has to look at two spots on the field simultaneously that can be 30 yards apart (the player at the imaginary line and the player passing the ball forward).
2. The extra time is complete BS. How is it that in today's day and age that fans are not permitted to count down the clock? If there is a stoppage of play, STOP THE DAMN CLOCK. JFC, how hard is that to do?
3. Make the goals bigger. You no longer have 5'6" Flagship type people in the goal that can't jump. Now they are 6'4" and extremely athletic. Make the goal bigger to promote more scoring.
4. Short shorts. :ohno:

I met Minnesota Fats in a casino in AC back in the '80's. As I was talking to him, this other guy comes up and said that he just finished reading his book. He said that he was curious that MF considered himself the world's greatest ____, _____, ______, and lover. MF said, "that's right, I'm the world's greatest lover. I have a hard-on 24 hours a day. When I die, they will have a difficult time closing the coffin."

1. The assistant referees (the ones running up and down the sidelines) are the ones who have primary responsibility for calling offsides. The ARs get it wrong too but if they're doing their job they're running down the field even with the last defender and can tell when someone is offsides or not. Offsides also gives the defense the ability to slow down in order to get the offsides call but if they time it wrong they put their goalie at a disadvantage and could allow a score. It's a strategic move with its own risks and rewards. And I also remember how much I disliked watching Brett Hull with the Blues hovering around the crease waiting to cherry pick a goal and I don't want that in soccer.
2. I'm not opposed to this and it would be possible and could make sense for the MLS and other pro leagues. How would you handle for youth soccer where most fields don't have scoreboards?
3. I like the goal size. A good finisher can put the goal in either corner where the goalie will have trouble getting it. Making the goal bigger would be like making the basket bigger in BBall; it would take too much of the skill out of shooting. And soccer goalies are getting bigger and more athletic. There are opportunities for bigger, athletic players but those guys are typically drawn to basketball at an early age and the conditioning requirements will scare a lot of people off (professional soccer players run something like an average of 7-10 miles/game).
4. At least they're not marathon style shorts. :D You're not going to run 7-10 miles wearing Chris Webber Fab 5 style baggy shorts.

I will have to take your word for it. Man City led the league in goals at just under 2.5 per game. 5th place Newcastle averaged less than 1.5 per game. :coffee:

BTW, the Man City goalie made one save yesterday.

That's a score or so less than a lot of football teams average (except they count less).

Is basketball a better game than football because teams score 60 points instead of 30 points?

Hey, YOU're the one arguing that the EPL is more wide-open, not me. I don't like basketball for a lot of the same reasons I don't like soccer... too many referee calls and non-calls impacting the game, and it's starting to look the same...

BTW, I'm not sure to which football you are referring. I'm pretty sure the Saints averaged close to 35 points per game last year.
