Amendment One to the North Carolina Constitution - to ban same-sex marriage, civil union, or any granting of rights that married heterosexual couples have now.

Call me naive, or just call me lazy, which I am. How accepted/not accepted are civil unions in other non-3rd world countries? Just curious.

I'm torn about this. I believe in equal rights for all (except negroes), but I don't like fags. This is a very tough call.

Same-sex marriage is legally recognized nationwide in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden. In the United States, same-sex marriages are not recognized federally, though same-sex couples can marry in six of the fifty states and one district. In Mexico, same-sex marriages are only performed in Mexico City, but these marriages are recognized by all Mexican states and by the Mexican federal government.[67] Israel does not recognize same-sex marriages performed on its territory, but recognizes same-sex marriages performed in foreign jurisdictions. In Brazil, the state of Alagoas performs same-sex marriages. Also, in other states, a same-sex couple may convert their civil union into marriage with the approval of a state judge. If approved, that marriage is recognized in all the national territory.[68]

Same-sex marriage is likely to be passed in a number of European countries in the next two years.

Another thing I don't get is the big deal news outlets make about this as a political issue.

Really?

What Obama/Biden/Romney thing about the institution of marriage? Seriously, that shouldn't even be in the top 20 Presidential campaign issues!

I am more liberal than our Prez on this issue, apparently. I would be voting no if I was still a NC voter.

No, you are mistaken. It is a very important issue to me, and yes, if thare is a choice between a pro-marriage and anti-marriage, I will take the pro-marriage every time.

But Obama's indifference is better than Romney's outright hostitlity.

I'm willing to bet that if there was a candidate that was 100% in agreement with every one of Jon's views except gay marriage, Jon wouldn't vote for him/her.

Candidate A is for gay marriage and against all of your other views.
Candidate B is against gay marriage and for all of your other views.

I would call it honesty rather than hostility. At least he is unequivocal about it.

It's only an issue for Obama because he's got his spokesman having to walk this "his view is evolving" BS tightrope. Frankly it's Obama's single biggest problem - not his views on gay marriage, but his inability to take clear stands on even seemingly minor issues (e.g., not in the top 20). Obamacare, for a much bigger example, is a shell of what it could be because he refused to tax the Cadillac plans that inconveniently are part of the auto unions' benefit packages. At least until SCOTUS strikes it down...
