Romney's VP Choice?

Post by AZGrizFan »

The VP talk seems to be narrowing down to a group of four likely candidates. Who do you think Romney picks as his VP? And do you think that candidate will be properly vetted?

Condi is the heavy hitter on that list, but is she into it?

I like Cunnilingus Rice, and Paul Ryan, but I think we're looking at Rubio to get the nod.

Two votes for "other"...who are you thinking of if not one of these four?

Well, that's my vote for Condi...perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part. Makes too much sense to actually happen.

He'll probably chose some junior state senator from Rhode Island or something like that. :ohno:

I voted "other"

Rice has the Bush taint on her still
Ryan's budget will ensure that everyone over aged 65 with any bit of mental capacity left will not vote for him
Rubio's Mormon background will sink him
Christie - I don't think two Northeastern liberals (everyone from the NE is a librul, right?) will fly.

C'mon, dback, Rubio was Mormon for about 5 minutes when he was a lttle kid. He's a practicing Catholic, with some evangelical Protestantism mixed in. I think the pick is his to lose. Chris Wallace gave him some tough questions yesterday on Fox News Sunday and he did well.

All of the Veep candidates will be thoroughly vetted. The era of Tom Eagleton is over.

And I won't comment on the relationship of Ms. Rice to Bush's taint.

I am glad SOMEONE got the Bush taint joke :kisswink:
Rubio - if Romney wasn't Mormon, it wouldn't matter. But with a Mormon leading the ticket, it does. Plus Rubio seems to be religion shopping - and Romney has the Etch-A-Scketch market already locked up.

That's what so funny. The people over 65 who think Ryan's Medicare deal affected them one bit doesn't have any mental capacity left.

In the end it doesn't matter. The media is going to demonize Romney's VP choice no matter who it is.

I voted other because I think he will pick a southern conservative. Too many people don't believe Romeny is a conservative and they also don't trust someone from Taxachusetts.

Rubio partially fits the bill but I don't think he will be the choice. I think it will be the gov. of Virginia.

Actually, I think Jindal is in the mix, but he is really low profile in the media's eyes right now. I agree with dback on Condi. I think she would be a good pick, but she conjures up the GWB stuff which is kryptonite right now.

I don't agree with dback's take on Rubio and the Mormon angle, though. I think the media might take a crack at it, but at the end of the day this election is going to be more about the economy than religion, it always is. Add to that the fact that neither Romney nor Rubio come across as, well, Santorum crazy, and I think the magical underpants won't play much of a role.

My pick is down to Jindal and Rubio with Jindal a slight favorite.

Jindal could be it too I suppose but everyone will bring up his poor response to the state of the union. I also don't see Jindal helping Romney with the Bubba vote. The Virginia gov. was a Lt. Col. in the army as well so that would give Romney some miltary cred which would help him too.

Rubio is the dems' worst case scenario... he's hispanic, successful, sharp, under control, and good looking.

I can tell y'all from his senate campaign that he is a smooth operator and turned what should have been a tough campaign into a coronation. IMO he's presidential timber in the future.

Questions:

Would being a running mate now, and losing, hurt or help or have no effect on long-term prospects for Rubio

Would Jeb and the Florida machine turn on Rubio, since they seem to have staked 2016 as Jeb's year?

Also - note that there is great antipathy between Cuban hispanics and Mexican hispanics. Rubio may not be of great benefit in the West to the ticket.

True, but competing groups can work together when necessary. Ask Congressman Luis Gutierrez (Illinois - 4 District). The northern half of his district is Puerto Rican and the southern half is Mexican.

Great question Jon!

Jeb stated in a speech yesterday that he would not accept if he was asked to be on the ticket and then heartily endorsed Rubio to be on the ticket.

Jeb is the best- by far- politician of the Bush clan. He was a VERY good governor for Florida and is the sharpest and smoothest of the Bush bunch and it's not even close. He is also young (presidentially speaking) so he can wait until 2020 easily. Time is on his side and perhaps the farther 2001-2009 slips into the past the more benefit it could possibly be to him.

One other thing re: Jeb, he is married to a hispanic woman so that would probably help him.
