If farming is too dangerous, then kids under 18 should not be allowed on a boat to go fishing. :twocents:

When will people learn that what works in NYC doesn't in Montana and what works there doesn't in Miami?

My dad farmed as an avocation. We grew up with some, not all of the chores that the kids who grew up on farms that were their families sole support, but it taught me a lot.

I wasn't particularly fond of getting up hay, feeding cattle, digging fence post holes, creosoting fence posts and boards, stretching barbed wire, helping to birth calves, load cattle and take them to market, hoeing, weeding, picking vegetables, fixing farm roads, working on farm equipment, felling trees, cutting, splitting and delivering firewood, etc., etc., but it has helped me through life.

Is there an element of danger, sure there is, just like feelings get hurt when kids keep score in sporting events, but it also teaches more valuable lessons. This PC crap is what is ruining our society. There are winners and losers. Effort matters, whether on the athletic field, the farm field or your professional field. You have to learn to do things right, which also reduces danger to an acceptable level.

This would be another nail in the coffin of the family farm and help to promote giant agri-business. Somehow that doesn't sound like something a liberal, populist president would pursue, unless he doesn't understand how things work on the ground and fit together practically...

I'm from the government and I'm here to help you. I have no hidden agenda or ulterior motive for providing that help. So just sit back, relax and I'll take care of everything. Just one question though. Are farms those wide-open spaces in flyover country?

Stop getting your news from Sarah Palin's Facebook feed.

:jack: :dunce:

Sarah Palin says the Obama administration wants to ban kids from working on family farms. In a Facebook post Wednesday she charges that the Department of Labor is working on regulations that would stop children from doing agricultural chores that teach hard work and help feed America.

“This is more overreach of the federal government with many negative overtones,” the ex-Alaska governor writes.

Is she right? Are before-school milkings, after-school stall mucking, and summertime hay-bale hauling at risk?

Weeellll, it would have been better if Ms. Palin had gone to the source material before putting this up. Maybe.

It is true that the Labor Department is working up new regulations bearing on under-age-16 agricultural work. It has been working on them for some years now, with lots of input from farm groups, which are very much worried about that ending-farm-chores thing. So in that sense Palin is resounding a previously rung alarm.

However, “the proposed regulations would not apply to children working on farms owned by their parents”, says the Labor Department press release from last August announcing publication of the proposed law revisions in the Federal Register.

Palin says in her Facebook post that the new regs “would prevent children from working on our own family farms.” This would not appear to be correct, unless there is some definition of "family farm" we nonfarm workers aren't familiar with.

So, without reading any of the posts or the article. If Children can't help out mom and dad on the farm, then the farmers will have to hire workers (illegal immigrants). Hmmmm....

Not all kids only work for their parents, it's just as stupid not matter how you spin it. Many kids would help other small farmers during harvest, or haying, or with livestock. Helping your neighbor out is how they roll in rural america.

I'm not saying I agree with it completely... but, spinning it as Obama banning kids from doing farm chores is ridiculous.

It proposes to bar kids under 16 from working with hazardous chemicals, operating heavy machinery, etc. All on non-family owned farms.

Not something to get up-in-arms about, imo.

It's election season, so people will bitch about anything and everything, though.

Of course its not something for YOU to get up-in-arms about. You've never worked a day in your life. Especially physical labor. Oh and FYI, this bill would have prevented both of my nephews from working their FAMILY farm because it was owned by their grandparents. Somehow, through the grace of God, both boys survived working the farm to adulthood.

Seriously, KY, sometimes doesn't this nanny-state mentality just piss you off?

First, this isn't a bill.

Second, where are you getting that they wouldn't be allowed to work on a farm owned by their grandparents? The grandparents' farm would fit under my definition of family farm for sure.

It's all about common sense. This ridiculous whether it's election season or not. Keep big brother out of places he knows nothing about, Romney or Obama. Obama happens to be in office, so he gets the nanny state label for now. In North Dakota you can get a license to drive at 14, and most of us sat on the tractor in the field at that age or younger. Not a lot of Fast Food places in rural america to get jobs at for the kids.

Great example, Dobie.

Many state governments allow you to get a RESTRICTED license under the age of 16. Want me to list the restrictions placed on restricted licenses? Because the restrictions will sound quite a bit like the restrictions proposed to be placed on these underage farmworkers. :coffee:

I’m curious as to who pushed this idea…my guess is large agribusiness and its lobby.

So much for the small family farm, RIP
It's all part of the plan to destroy the family farm and small rural towns. They environmentalists and government control freaks are trying to force everyone into large population centers so they can be more easily controlled.

There aren't any family farms anymore - they have been replaced by Corporate Farms. Small towns are dying on their own -they don't need the Government to do anything.

Why aren't you up in arms about kids under 16 not being allowed to drive with full privileges?

Who is the government to say who can drive and who can't?! Stop the Nanny State DMV!! Let the parents decide if their kids are responsible enough to drive!!
