Agreed, but, you can't blame him for pouncing on a better-paying, more visible gig.Cap'n Cat wrote:Not cool.

Glad to see Arkansas has pursured another coach with ethics...a real "man of his word" kind of guy, to replace Petrino...

Wow what a dick move…and to his alma mater no less. Ouch. Well maybe this will cheer WSU fans up a bit:

There is a better clip showing highlights during the rant but I’m too lazy to find it. BTW this is possibly the best sports rant I have ever heard.

Screamin's signature actually sums everything in this thread up...the coach leaving is Bubba Watson in the clip, guy on the right is Weber, and Charl is Arkansas.

Say hello to Paul Wulff. Better coach then Smith and he knows and has won in the Big Sky.
Re: John L Smith Leaving Weber for Arkansas
He had 850,000 reasons to make this move. Can you really blame him. Sure it is kind of a Dick move, but we would all have done the same thing.

Yup
Of course, after the one year he is done at Arkansas - how long was his Weber contract?
Re: John L Smith Leaving Weber for Arkansas
I think 3 years, but I could be wrong.dbackjon wrote:SACCAT wrote:He had 850,000 reasons to make this move. Can you really blame him. Sure it is kind of a Dick move, but we would all have done the same thing.

Yep. Sounds like his stands to make more in 10 months at Arkansas than he would in 3 years with Weber. He could still be name the Arkansas coach at the end as well if he does well.SACCAT wrote:I think 3 years, but I could be wrong.dbackjon wrote:

Re: John L Smith Leaving Weber for Arkansas
So John L. Smith should've predicted that the Arkansas job would become available and not taken the Weber State gig? Get a clue. I bet you were one of the people who dissed Urban Meyer for returning from his sabbatical to coach Ohio State.Appaholic wrote:Glad to see Arkansas has pursured another coach with ethics...a real "man of his word" kind of guy, to replace Petrino...
No one planned it this way- neither Smith nor Meyer could predict these jobs would become open.

Wulff would be a good choice, but I have a couple of better ones. How about North Texas OC Mike Canales? He has experience recruiting in Utah, having been OC at Snow JC, and he has an amazing offense.
My other choice would be StL Rams Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel. He's been a HC at the D-II level with a whole lot less talent, and is more than ready to do it again. And he would be a major plus given that he is a former Wildcat quarterback and wide receiver. (I'm STILL mad about how he came off the bench TWO years in a row to screw Sac over with a quick kick. LOL.)

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Re: John L Smith Leaving Weber for Arkansas
No I didn't and it's moot point. The situations are completely different. Urban walked away from one good gig for his own reasons and landed on his feet with another equally good gig in his home state after taking a personal sabbatical. Smith accepted a multi-year gig, at his alma mater no less, spent the spring practice preaching commitment to his players, then took the first opportunity presented to accept a 10 month gig for more money, prestige and fame without ever coaching a game for his alma mater. It's a shitty thing to do to the Weber players, but consistent with his past decisions (see Louisville). It doesn't surprise me he's a good friend of Petrino. At least Arkansas has been consistent in their pursuit of Head Coaches with a history of burning bridges with former players / employers....rkwittem wrote:So John L.
